Dimension 8400 Windows 8 install issue

Hi forums,

I've been trying to install my Windows 8 upgrade on my Dell Dimension 8400 (it's my backup pc pls don't laugh)

It get's most of the way through and then comes up with the following errors:

Error Code: 0x0000005D

0x030F0304

0x756E6547

0x49656E69

0x6C65746E

I have Windows 7 installed currently, and Ubuntu set for dual-boot.  Upon rebooting I get around 5 entries pop up in my boot selector, and choosing windows 7 returns everything to normal.

Any suggestion?  I read others have gotten Win8 on this machine successfully and others had trouble with the sound drivers, so I have to assume the trouble is on my end..

If the CPU supports NX, BIOS A09 would display the option.  As I indicated, the base processor in the D8400 does not support NX and the option isn't shown in BIOS.

Additionally, Dell does not support Win8 on any Dimension series system, so they won't be offering any Win 8 drivers.

Yes, it's strange, but for whatever reason even though the processor does have the capability, Dell did not write the Dimension 8400 bios to give that option for this processor.

However, for other processors, the bios does provide that option. (confirmed only for the Pentium 4 670 so far, presumably there are others too though).

Since the GX280 and Dimension 8400 are the same chipset and bios wise there would be Vista Drivers.

No win8 Drivers but that could be solved with Radeon 5450.

RoHe, according to what you posted in this thread about your own Dimension 8400, and what the OP posted about his, it's not the case that the bios always offers the option to turn on / off Data Execution Prevention (NX) when the processor is capable of it. However, the bios does offer the option for certain NX capable processors.

About the drivers, I don't think Dell supported Windows 7 on the Dimension models, yet people got Windows 7 running perfectly on the Dimension 8400. So there's hope for Windows 8 on it, as far as I can see.

Dear Sir,

I successfully installed Win 8 on my Dimensions 8400 3.4 and 3.6 Mhz machines. What's odd is that on the 3.3Mhz It can't be installed as it seems to not support  the NX enable feature ( it's not listed on the  BIOS settings).

Considering it's almost the same processor, I don't understand why this happens.

Any comments would be welcome.

Intel makes lots of different processors within each family with different levels of functionality. Fewer functions generally means a cheaper chip price and PC manufacturers tend toward 'cheaper'.

Somebody buying a new chip at retail either to build their own system or to upgrade may be willing to pay higher prices for an "enhanced" processor.

Most people will never even know their processor has limited functionality unless something comes along (eg, Win 8) which requires that missing function...

Here's how I got Windows 8 up and running on my 8400:

  1. Go to www.cpuid.com and download and install CPU-Z.
  2. On the CPU tab note the Processor Name.  In my case it was Intel Pentium 4 540.
  3. Go to www.intel.com and search for the Processor Name.  In the specs it will tell you if the processor supports the execute disable bit or not.
  4. In my case the P4 540 did not support execute disable, but the P4 540J did.
  5. Go to eBay and purchase a used P4 540J for less than $10.
  6. Google "Dell 8400 Service Manual" and find one that includes CPU removal.
  7. Remove the P4 540 and replace it with the P4 540J.
  8. Upgrade to Windows 8.
