Dimension 9100 Memory Upgrade
I have a Dimension 9100 with two 256 mb memory chips/cards. The motherboard can support up to 4gb. I want to upgrade to the full capacity, 4gb. There are four memory boards slots and per the Dell Specification each slot has a limit of 1gb each. When shopping for memory board upgrades for this computer I have seen an option for a 2gb memory board. When I remove the existing 256mb cards do I have to use four 1gb memory cards or can I use two 2gb cards?

You need 4 1 gb modules in pairs. Each slot holds up to 1 gb. Go to Crucial.com to see the limits and the prices. www.crucial.com/.../listparts.aspx
DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400
Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
Crucial is a good place to get ram for Dell computers. Remember that 32 bit windows can utilize only 3 to 3.5 GB so maybe the best buy is 2 modules of 1gb each and use your 2 256 modules for a total of 2.5 GB. You will probably want to replace the old 9100 in the near future.
