Dimension 9100 Motherboard Upgrade

Hi,

I am looking to possibly upgrade the motherboard on my Dimension 9100.  It currently has the stock X8582.  Has anyone successfully upgraded the motherboard on this system?  I have heard that there are problems with other motherboards fitting correctly, but as foolish as this may sound, I just LOVE this case!  I feel the need for a complete overhaul, but again I love my case and would love to be able to keep it.  The new motherboard can even be another dell model (maybe from a new system, an XPS, or an Alienware).

I know that this is a long shot, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dell does use Custom motherboards in many models and including the 9100.  Also the 9100 is a "BTX" style design, not the more common ATX style and thus there are very few retail BTX motherboards.  However, if you were able to fit a Retail BTX motherboard in the case you are faced with the Dell Proprietary (and undocumented) front Panel connection - that is not the standard "ATX" style.  In addition if you were to use a non-Dell motherboard you would need a new copy of Windows as the Dell supplied OS will only install on a Dell motherboard.

The BTX style case is basically obsolete.  PC Vendors used them at one time as that was going to be the new "standard" but it didn't last and they went back to the conventional "ATX" style.   (I have a client with a Gateway that is a BTX style but like Dell, Gateway quit using the BTX style).

With the BTX and the Dell proprietary front panel connection you are very limited, even with another Dell BTX motherboard as there is no guarantee that a Dell motherboard from another model would have the same front panel wiring connection (from past posts on this forum the Dell wiring can vary from model to model).   Finally, as the BTX models are "old technology" there is no real reason to replace the Dell motherboard with another Dell as it would be replacing "old technology" with "old technology".  Best to use the $$ either towards a new PC or built your own.

Has anyone successfully replaced the motherboard on a Dimension 9100?  If so, with which mobo was it replaced?

I'm thinking of just buying an XPS 410 off EBay for $150, because it is capable of upgrading to a dual or quad core processor.  This seems like a good deal to me, but does anyone think that it is not worth it?

I have two XPS 410's with Q6600. They've been fantastic. I even put 8 GB of RAM in one of them and it worked great.

Hi, BDELGADO, are you saying that u have 9100 motherboard being replaced by XPS410 MB?

I know they have differnt chipset. 9100=945  xps410=965. I wonder if that matters for replacing motherboard?
