It's not the model computer or OS that matters. It's your video card. You cannot go higher than your video card allows. The new monitor will do fine with 1280x1024.

Unfortunately, it works, but everything is stretched out and squashed...not good. Is there a Dell compatible video card that you couid recommend?

What is the model number of your monitor?
In the Windows Display Properties window, what kind of monitor does Windows think is attached?
It is important to know exactly what it says.
