Dimension E520 Boot Problem
Greetings
My Dimension E520 is hanging at boot.
The system posts and gets to the Startup Repair or Boot Normally option. Choosing either takes me to a black scrren.
Rebooted and F8 to get to the boot options--Safe Mode, Safe Mode Command Prompt, and Last Good all take me to a black screen
Put in the system restore disk (dvd), boot to the DVD. The loading Windows files bar fills then remains on the screen.
Put in the Diagnostic DVD and boot to DVD. Loading DRMK Version 8.00 appears and remains on screen.
I have my suspicion as to the problem, but I would like a second and third opinion. Any help would be appreciated!

Check your main power supply and replace as needed.

The operating system has been seriously corrupted, and from the rest of your description I would say that the hard drive has failed. Before giving up completely on the hard drive you might want to change the SATA controller to RAID Autodetect/ATA and try your diagnostic disk again. Not all diagnostic disks can handle RAID On mode.

So I have pulled the drive out and added it to my kids 530S. I was able to do a full HD scan which reported no errors. I was also able to (after disconnecting the 530S HD) run the recovery DVD and bootrec.exe /FixMbr /FixBoot. Then I trotted my drive back upstairs and reinstalled. On reboot, same problem.
I am now leaning towards a non-hard drive issue. Will the 530S power supply work in the E520?
(A new XPS 8300 is on order, so this process is academic)

You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.
Note: You will need a power supply, with four SATA power connectors.
