Dimension E520 Fail to boot

This may be totally self inflicted, but while trying to image a drive and get it to boot, I pulled the CMOS battery and cleared CMOS hoping that would help.  Wrong.

Now I get the Dell flash screen, a message that floppy is not present, and then instructions F1 to contnue, F2 for setup.

That's it, period, it is stalled there.

What is next?  Manual does not cover steps beyond that point.  I've tried to boot from a bootable CD, rerun steps but nothing works.  The mouse and KB are USB, the only option on this MB.

It's like the mouse and KB are not connected.  Saw one message that battery was low, but that did not reappear on subsequent reboots, only the F1-F2 described above.

Will appreciate any help out there.

TIA, pjl

Have you tried using a new CMOS battery?

I usually go for external drives to save me for this sort of trouble. It actually works pretty well on my end.

Battery 3.02v. Waited longer with baty out and it rebooted, finally.

Pls say more about ext. drive.  Can you create a full disk image and recover it to a different drive?  Do you get all the apps, settings, preferences, etc back?  Appreciate your comments.
