The image might have been corrupted too bill, would suggest you call Dell and get the OS CD and Drivers CD sent.
So you can do a complete reinstallation starting from the scratch.

You can disable the diskette drive from BIOS. Just load into BIOS by tapping f2 abd then go to Diskette Drive and then confrim off/disable on it.
Then after you keep tapping f8 on Dell logoand enter on Disable Automatic Restart on System failure so that you can capture the error code on Bleu screen.
Check if you can go to Safe mode on the same f8 screen.

You have turned off a machine running windows update when it told you DO NOT TURN OFF until updates complete.
The windows is corrupted now and may not be repairable. You could try system restore to last known boot but thats probably too late now.

Hi billwilkins,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your post.
Did you get the blue screen again anytime?
Please do mark down the code and post it while replying. (It would say STOP Error Code at the bottom)
Remove all the external peripherals like printer, external hard drives etc and remove the power plug from the power and then hold down the power button for 30 seconds and release your finger.
Now turn on the computer and then check if boots fine.
Try the safe mode with networking option again by using the F8 key.
Would also request you to run the Diagnostics from F12 page now and see if you get any error codes regarding the hardware failure if any?
By the way, Is it black screen with white pointer arrow or Is it blank screen with blinking cursor.

Ok, it seems to be a problem with the Operating system
I presume it didnt work into safe mode too right? Any error codes in the daigs ?
Then I would suggest you can do the PC Restore ie loading the computer back to factory image.
This will delete all your user programs and you will loose the data, if you are ok with it then go for it.
