DirectSound Driver?

Hey all

Recently i have been having problems with my computer crashing in regular boot. I recently got this message when trying to play music

Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration.

Error code: 8878000A

I have no idea where to get DirectSound drivers or what to do with them.

Thanks very much for any help!!!

Jammer13,

You can use the DirectX Troubleshooter to assist you in your quest for understanding. Click Start | Run. Then type in msinfo32. When your Systems Information Window appears, located Tools and then DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

When the Diagnostic Tool appears, select the tab marked "Sound". This will ask you if you want to run through a series of tests. Perform those tests and read the text in the information box below.

More than likely, you will benefit from an update of your DirectX to the latest version. For more details you can go here , or you can go to a Windows Update and select the Update for the DirectX that Microsoft Updates suggests for your system.

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunatley, i could not find the Tools tab in the System Info. Im running XP so maybe the layout is different. Also DirectX 9.0 wouldnt install because it was not tested for XP.

Thanks again for your repsonse.

Jammer,

If you click on Start | Help, there ought to be some mention of DirectX somewhere--unless XP does not use the technology. Try a keyword search using sound. That usually produces both the Sound Troubleshooter and the DirectX Troubleshooter.

All right!

Thanks, turns out all i have to do is type Dxdiag in the Run option. When i open the DirectX Diag. an error comes and and says:

Error: Problem getting extra sound info, result code= 0x8878000a (the request failed because DirectSound rescources, such as priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

And then i cannot click on any of the tabs.

After trying it a second time, it asked me to bypass DirectMusic and i did. Then i clicked on the Sound tab and went to test it. After testing the result was:

DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

Thanks for help and all responses

Jammer,

On the page for the DirectSound Test, there is a Help button. If you click that, I believe that it ought to provide you with details regarding DirectX and DirectSound. The new window ought to be called DX Diagnostic Tool Help.

In my copy, located under the heading "Restoring Drivers", it states:
Restoring Drivers
On some configurations, DirectX® Diagnostic Tool allows you to restore older audio and video drivers. This may be the best way of solving problems with incompatible drivers.

If a Restore button appears on the More Help page, you can click this button to run the DirectX Setup program.

DirectX Setup has two buttons labeled Restore Audio Drivers and Restore Display Drivers. Clicking either of these buttons will restore drivers that were replaced when DirectX was installed on your system. If a button is disabled, you do not have older drivers to switch back to. In that case, you should contact the hardware manufacturer for the newest drivers.

DirectX Setup also provides a checkbox to disable D3D hardware acceleration, which is something you can already do from within DxDiag. (See Overriding Default Behavior.)

Consequently, if you go to the tab (located along the top bar of the DirectX Troubleshooter) there should be a tab that is marked "More Help". If you click that, do you see a RESTORE button?

Also, you may find much more valuable assistance by going into the Software - XP forum and finding another XP user who is familiar with your error message, and familiar with exactly where and how you can update your sound drivers.

Another thing that you can try: Close all programs--with the exception of systray and explorer--and try running the dxdiag. That error that you received seems to imply that something else is calling (using) your DirectSound.

@$&%! I got the same problem only I use Windows 98 Se.!

Jammer13 I found an work around to listen to my music, if
you got Winamp (or if you don't, it's time you get it! ;)
Lunch Winamp, PRESS : ALT + S (simultaniously, both of
them at the same time), a new window should pop up, in it
sellect, Output, and then instead of DirectSound.dll,
sellect waveOut.dll, close the window, and Voila! any
Audio should work now in Winamp.

Really is there some1 in here, at DELL that can tell us
what to do in order to get our devices working and running
up again...? PLEASE!

THANKS ahead! :)
