Your system should have shipped with DirectX7 and IE/OE 5.5, I believe. IE 5.5 is the integrated browser for sure, and I believe DX8 was released after the debut of ME.
If you have made no changes to your install of DirectX or IE/OE versions, you can check the version of IE but opening the browser, choosing the Help button on the upper word toolbar, and then choose About IE. To check your current version of DirectX, while in Windows Explorer, go to C:\Program Files\DirectX\Setup. Run DXDiag, and the version is given at the bottom of the System tab. It should say either 7, 7.0a, or 8, and may give another way of stating the version in parentheses which includes the build number and that good stuff.

As with many other ME problems, 7.0a had to be patched to run in ME. LOL
Have a good one
