Disable USB Legacy Support

Hello. I just purchased a Dell E510 Dimension Desktop. I was dismayed to discover that it does not have a serial port.  I have three serial port devices:  a Palm handheld, a Garmin GPS, and an AutoXray code scanner for car repair.  After some research, I purchased a Targus USB to Serial Converter #PA088 Item No. 04.  When I try to load the software for the USB converter, it hangs on reboot, and my serial devices won’t work after I force a reboot.  I’ve tried removing the hardware and reinstalling the software without success.

I called Targus and they explained this is a known problem, and that I need to seek Dell’s help to “disable legacy USB support in the BIOS.”

Today Dell tech support walked me through the BIOS screens, but there is NO option to disable USB Legacy Support.

I’m stuck. I certainly can’t be the only Dell customer who’s grinding his or her teeth over the lack of a serial port.  Help please.

The newer Dell systems seem to lack the option for USB Legacy Support in the BIOS Setup.  I suspect that is because the newer systems have one USB port that is active all the time.  I would try changing the port that the adapter is plugged into and see what happens.  If that doesn't work then double check the BIOS Setup to see if a USB Device is appearing in the Boot Sequence.  If it is then disable it or remove it to the end of the boot list.
