Disappointing Display

I recently purchased a dell XPS420 system with a Dell 22" Monitor...model E228WFP and ATI HD 2600 XT Video Card.  The display is very bright...it looks like a TV would look if you turned the brightness control all the way up.  Dell sent me a replacement Monitor, and, I connected a 22" Samsung...and both looked the same as the original Monitor...very Bright, colors washed out.  If I disconnect the monitor from my XPS...and just let it do its test pattern....the Test display is very good, colors Vivid, Contrast and Brightness....very good (you see a rectangular square with the 3 colors ...this test moves about the screen).  I did go into the ATI Catalyst Center and set the GAMMA to it lowest setting...this makes the Display better.  I have never experienced a PC System where just connecting the Monitor to the PC the display was very good, perhaps just a few minor adjustments to fine tune it.  I have worked with the Monitors Brightness and Contract...they are both at factory defaults....75...but I cannot seem to get a picture that I would expect....   As my PC Boots up, the Monitor comes on very bright until the ATI Catalyst Center loads and then its settings takeover and the Display is better.

Has anyone one wioth this Hardware experiences the same disappointment and if so, why have you done to correct it?

this is not the first report. I believe it is the video card. ATi cards are notorious for having extememly bright displays. This has been an issue for a few years with their products. I think you can continue to lower the gamma and also look at the color settings...if i recall there is another couple of tweeks that can be made in the Catalyst control center..

I have the same monitor, but the nvidia 8800gt. I do not not have these same issues so the monitor make is not the issue (though that does not rule out your specific one). Are you running the latest drivers from ATI? Dell's Nvidia drivers are several versions behind the ones on Nvidias site....

Yep; did that just last week, if anything it seemed to make the dispaly a tiny bit brighten.....just what I did not need.  All seems to point to the Card.....I take it with your Card....you just connected the Monitor.....and the Display was fine......vivid colors...good Contrast and Brightness....    I did speak with ATI, they claimed if the card was defective I would see Lines in the display, which I don't.  But after trung 3 Monitors, and all very bright....it can't be the Monitors....it points to the card.

yes colors look fine to me -- I don't think I adjusted anything on the monitor or in the software. I am using dvi port from my 420 and using the vga port on the monitor from a laptop - both look fine.
