Display driver problem
Hello, I just got a new Dell Dimension 3000 computer 3 weeks ago...and just 3 days ago started receiving a message something like this: ialmrnt has caused your display driver to stop functioning normally. It said to reboot to return to full functionality but I did several times but it would mess up again, looking as if it were in safe mode. Eventually I got a blue screen saying ialmrnt5 got stuck in an infinite loop. I then called Dell tech and they returned my system to the way it was when I got it. Well all was fine until a few hours ago when it happened again. I rebooted and it hasn't happened again since, but I'm afraid it will. I have updated my McAfee security suite since then (I was reinstalling it).
I thought the problem was taken care of:womansad::smileymad:
Please help, thanks.

Ok... that message about "ialmrnt" having problems or stuck in an infinite loop are referring to your graphics chipset from Intel. It should mean that you don't have an actual video card, but an integrated chipset embedded in the motherboard that is performing that particular function for you. Unfortunately, these are notorious for being incompatible with a growing number of 3D accelerated games, as you've been finding out - especially the newer or more demanding ones.
First thing to try would be to determine exactly which one you've got and get (and install) the latest drivers from Intel. My wife has a Dell 2400 with such a chipset and that's what I check when she has problems. The last several times, downloading the latest replease of their drivers (which do seem to get updated on a fairly regular basis) allowed her to play the games. You will find some, however, where Intel chipsets are specifically listed in the "does not work on" category.
Secondly, there may be some specific graphics options in the games that you would need to either turn down or off. Pixel Shaders, Shadows, things like that. First things first, however, and that would be to check on the state of your drivers.
So... any idea what you've got there under the hood?

I just got an XPS M140 and am also getting the "ialmrnt5 display driver has stopped working normally" error message while playing a game. Needless to say it is frustrating to have a new computer not working and it looks like others are having the same problem. You say to download the latest drivers. I'm not sure which one or all to do.
Windows website has one called "Dell Inc. - Video - Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family" dated 10/14/05.
Dell's website has one called "Video: Intel Graphics Video, Driver, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v.6.14.10.4410,A07; Release date 12/9/05; Description: Intel graphics driver for 915GM solutions"
And Intel has "IEGD for Windows v4.1, date 10/12/05" and it says in the notes not to install over a previous version of the Intel Embedded Graphics driver.
Thanks!
