Driver Help
Hi - Am new to the forum and hope this is the right place to ask questions and BEG for help.
I have a Optiplex 790 that is out of warranty.
After many years of faithful service it crashed.
During a move all the reinstall discs were destroyed (really).
I have installed a legitimate Windows 7 OS.
As you might suspect I have no internet. Device Manager says I don't have drivers for
- Ethernet Controller
- PCI Simple Communications Controller
- SM Bus controller
I've read throughout the various forums that I need to download and install the drivers, in their correct order, and then reinstall Windows 7.
I have printed the Dell "how to reinstall drivers in the correct order.
I've entered my service tag/express code and a list of drivers comes up. I don't know which driver to select.
So I checked the original configuration and it lists the components as:

None of these seem to relate to the missing drivers. I'm accessing this information from a different computer so I can't run the analyze feature.
When I refine my driver search with "network" this is what is listed.
- Does it matter that the above driver is from 2013 and my system was built in 2011?
- Is this the correct driver and can I install it and reinstall Windows 7 and get the internet so that I can use analyze?
- Is there any way I can purchase all the correct drivers from Dell even though I'm out of warranty and if so, how do I do that?
- Can I find the right names if I run bios with the F12 key option at power-up?
Any help anyone can give would be great.
Thanks in advance...
VHosford

Hi,
Thank you for reaching out to us.
To answer you queries one by one
1. Year of driver release doesn't matter - Later the better
2.The network driver in this post is the correct one, however you don't need to reinstall windows after driver installation, Once all the drivers are in place, you may start using your PC.
3. You do not need to purchase any drivers as they are always available for free online in our support site.
4.I am not sure what exactly you mean by right names in F12.
Please find the links for 2 chipset drivers you need to install along with the network driver.
Try installing these two drivers and also the network driver you have mentioned in the post, That should get the computer up and running.
Feel free to get back to us for any further assistance.
Thank you

Network Driver for Windows 7.
The SM Bus driver is part of the Intel chipset driver package.
I'm not sure about the Simple Communications controller; I would need the hardware and vendor IDs (which can be obtained from their Device Manager entry's properties).
