Driver install problem

Having a driver install problem. Replaced my Nvidia 5200 with a 6800. Followed all the great suggestions by people here. Used Add/Remove on old drivers then followed with Drive Cleaner Pro, twice. Ran the Nvidia 91.31 driver install. Everything looks normal until the end then I get this error message: “Nvidia Uninstall Error (18), There are no more files, Software\Nvidia Corp Installer”. Click on the OK button and then get this message: “The system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time run the install again”.

I also tried installing and early driver, 84.21 with the same results. I have also put the original 5200 card back in with the same results. Anybody have any suggestions?

Question? Did you change from Nvidia drivers to a windows generic driver prior to trying to install the new drivers? I found that this was necessary for me to install or update Nvidia drivers. You can do this by entering Safe Mode and changing to a generic Windows driver.
1. Reboot Safe Mode
2. Change Adapter driver to Generic Windows graohics driver.
3. Reboot for driver change to take effect.
4. Shutdown Windows and make sure your PC turns off.
5. Unplug you PC from wall connection.
6. Open the case, ground youself before handling components.
7. Install new card and make sure it is seated properly.
8. Reboot your system and it will be generic 640 x 480 mode.
9. Insert the CD that contains the drivers for you new card and run the install.

This always work for me..

Nascar,

I started to do as you suggested then realized that I'm not sure how you change to a Generic Windows driver. How do I do that?

Not sure what I told will work, Go here instead and see if this helps..
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=10&p_created=1096404673&p_sid=lghwIybi&p_lva=1879&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTAxJnBfcHJvZHM9MiZwX2NhdHM9NTgmcF9wdj0xLjI7Mi51MCZwX2N2PTEuNTg7Mi51MCZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX2ZubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWluc3RhbGwgZHJpdmVycw**&p_li=&p_topview=1

Make sure you get all the URL as it is a long one. The instructions I gave are for Windows 98SE and Nvidia uninstall and install drivers. I couldn't see a way to do that in Windows XP..

BTW, If you can copy just the driver install applet to your hard drive you could start in safe mode and run the install from there and see if it will install and complete.

Sorry about the boo boo with the former information
