Drivers for Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

Hi All,

I saw some posts on this topic, but couldn't find something close to what I am facing. I had Windows XP Home on my Dimension 4700 box when I bought it in Dec'04. I installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition last week. Now, I see that the Device Manager complains about several devices. The devices it complains are:

standard VGA graphics adapter
Ethernet controller
multimedia audio controller
sm bus controller
video controller

I don't find any drivers for Windows Server 2003 on Dell website. On the resource cd, it provides just a diagnostic utility and thats it. I checked driverguide.com but was not sure which drivers to download.

The machine is for my personal use and do development work on it. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Abbas

In most cases, probably excepting the video, the XP drivers should work. Start with the chipset drivers.

Thanks for your quick reply. I tried installing the drivers from resource cd. Only the chipset driver worked. Others didn't. :(

According to other posts, Dell does not support Server 2003 on the Dimension series.  Dell sells other models for servers.

About all you can do is check the server models and see if anything there will work with the Dimension hardware.

The Other drivers will work but you must turn on things that are INTENTIONALLY disabled.

You must run DXDIAG and set directx Acceleration to FULL from the HOZED position.

Then INSTALL Directx 9.0c

Then Enable the windows Audio service as this is also DISABLED in 2003.

Right Click on desktop > Select "Properties" > Select "Settings" tab > Click "Advanced" > Select "Troubleshoot" tab and move the Hardware Acceleration slider all the way to "Full" > Click OK > OK

Click Start > Run > Type dxdiag & enter > Select Display tab > Click Enable on all Acceleration options > Click Exit

Now its time to enable the Themes service which allows you to select the Windows XP "Luna" themes from Display Properties.

To do this: Click Start > Run > type services.msc & Enter > Look for the Themes service > Double Click it > Set the Startup dropdown to Automatic > Press Apply > Now you can press Start > Click OK

Themes are now enabled While we are here lets enable Windows Audio

Look for the Windows Audio service > Double Click it > Set the Startup dropdown to Automatic > Press Apply > Now you can press Start > Click OK

You will also have to go into internet explorer under tools internet options security and set all the settings to LOW or NO security so that when the resource disk says click here to install it will actually do something as the windoze security settings make IE nonfunctional in 2003.

You will also need a copy of Microsoft Java.  This can be had from Dell NON SP1 or SP2 XP cds its MSJAVX.EXE or something like that a 5 meg file in teh OEM directory.

ALL of this assumes you are logged in as the LOCAL admistrator with FULL RIGHTS.

It does work.  But it requires a lot of twigging.  You cant even shut down without putting something in or disabling the shutdown but must send a love note to bill gates service.
