Dual Monitor display using 1 AMD Radeon HD 7770
I have had dual monitor displays in the past. I understand ms windows and amd software will allow different settings once all the monitors are connected. My new Dell is not in the house yet, but its on the way. I have received the two monitors.
My question concerns the PC to monitor's connection. I have 2 Ultrasharp 2412M. Each monitor has a VGA (not going to use) connector, a DVI connector and a Displayport* connector. I have a Dell XPS 8500 with AMD Radeon HD 7770 graphics card. (I believe) The 7770 has 2 Displayport outputs and 1 HDMI output and 1 DVI output. I have researched something called eyefinity but don't believe I need that device until I connected 3 or more monitors.
My question is: What is the best way to connect the 2 monitors for the best graphics, as I combine multiple displays to behave like a single large display? Should I use the 2 Displayport connectors from the graphics card, one for each monitor? Or should I use one HDMI from the card to my main monitor (I would need to buy a HDMI to DVI connector) and then use the DVI output to the second monitor? I am willing to buy a connection converter, because I just want the best readable, playable graphics. Lastly, is the Displayport type of connection as good as DVI output? and rival HDMI?

Hi Ric815,
As both the monitors have display ports and the graphics card also has two display ports. The best option to connect two monitors would be using the display ports.
To compare the ports you can check the specifications below:
Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any further questions.

If you swap the monitors, is the result the same, so you can rule out a defective monitor?
If it's not a monitor issue, you may need an "active" HDMI>DP converter cable with a chip in it. I suspect you have a "passive" HDMI (PC)>DP (Monitor) cable, or maybe a cable that's for DP (PC)>HDMI (Monitor).
You might be better off just sticking to DVI on one of the monitors.

Hello,
Just got an XPS 8500 and a pair of U2312HM monitors. I can't seem to nail down the actual port/mode combination I want to use; I did see it mentioned above as working so please confirm this is possible:
The AMD Radeon HD 7770 card that shipped with the XPS PC has a Display Port + HDMI + DVI. Since both monitors have Display Ports, I bought a DP to DP cable and the DP to HDMI cable arrived today. I disconnected the DVI cable on the second monitor and replaced it with the DP to HDMI and got nothing. In the mutiple display dialog, it shows 1 = U2312HM and 2 = unknown VGA.
Can the AMD Radeon HD 7770 support DP *and* HDMI at the same time or am I wasting my time? Going back to DVI if this is the case.
Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply.
Live and learn, I'll throw that DP to HDMI cable on eBay. I also have a Dell laptop with port replicator and found that it has DP connectors, so I think I will get another DP tio DP cable and do the following:
XPS 8500: monitor 1 = DP / 2 = DVI
Laptop: monitor 1 = DVI / 2 + DP

I have just received my XPS-8500 SE with what is advertised as an AMD HD-7770 video card. It has 1 DVI port, 1 HDMI port, and only 1 full sized displayport. All of the literature I've seen for the AMD 7770 shows it with 2 mini displayports as you describe. Is there some special "Dell" flavor of the 7770 or is there a 7750 in there mislabeled as a 7770? Device manager thinks it is a 7770, so what gives?
