It is okay to use this configuration however, the ecc function will not be in effect unless all the modules are ecc. I am currently running this type of setup in my Dimension 4100 and everything is fine. See
this information about ECC vs Non ECC.
I too have a dell 8200 and was thinking of ordering from them and having one of their techs install another 256 mb or ram for me. Question, having 256 now, would I even see much difference having another 256 mb? or am I throwing money away. Using win ME and whether I upgrade to xp is a good question although they have sent me the upgrade...... leary of it at this time.
Do you know if it matters which RIMMs are in the first two slots? For example, should I install the two 256 MB ECC RIMMs in the first two slots and the two 512 MB non-ECC RIMMs in the last two slots? Or should the non-ECC 512s come first?
I don't think it matters which is installed first. The key here is to make sure that they are matching pairs (all 256MB) and use the same speed (all PC800).
