Ecc error logging question

Hi... for an Opti GX270....  if there were memory errors  (causing GPFs, etc) caused specifically by not having ECC ram - would those show up in the BIOS error log?

Thanks,

Scary

Errors are not CAUSED by NOT having ecc ram.

If you think its ram download and run the long test for
memory from microsoft.

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

The Windows Memory Diagnostic tests the Random Access Memory (RAM) on your computer for errors. The diagnostic includes a comprehensive set of memory tests. If you are experiencing problems while running Windows, you can use the diagnostic to determine whether the problems are caused by failing hardware, such as RAM or the memory system of your motherboard. Windows Memory Diagnostic is designed to be easy and fast. On most configurations, you can download the diagnostic, read the documentation, run the test and complete the first test pass in less than 30 minutes.

Hi.  I appreciate the feedback.  However, we're in a situation where a manager insists it's the lack of ECC ram.  We've run Dell diagnostics, and the memory checks out, but that wouldnt necessarily detect situational errors.

Can you explain more why it's definitely not the lack of ecc ram?

Thanks,

Scary

Errors are not CAUSED by NOT having ecc ram.
ECC Ram will tell you if there are PARITY Problems.

Parity checking provides single-bit error detection for the system memory, but does not handle multi-bit errors, and provides no way to correct memory errors. An advanced error detection and correction protocol was invented to go a step beyond simple parity checking. Called ECC, which stands for error correcting circuits, error correcting code, or error correction code, this protocol not only detects both single-bit and multi-bit errors, it will actually correct single-bit errors on the fly, transparently. This causes a slight performance hit. ECC does NOT fix, viruses, spyware, registry corruption, hard drive corruption, poorly coded software, etc.
ECC Ram is not self healing for more than single bit errors.

ECC has the ability to correct a detected single-bit error in a 64-bit block of memory. When this happens, the computer will continue without a hiccup; it will have no idea that anything even happened. However, if you have a corrected error, it is useful to know this; a pattern of errors can indicate a hardware problem that needs to be addressed. Chipsets allowing ECC normally include a way to report corrected errors to the operating system, but it is up to the operating system to support this.
