Enter button stopped working.

Enter button doesnt work anymore. I've tried restarting it. Enter button worked for about 15 minutes after that. Enter doesn't even work on the on-screen keyboard. I've also had another issue, my sound disappeared! I used to have sound on my computer until recently. I'm really frutsurated right now. :(

Yeah, after I posted this, I looked around and I find that I'm not alone. I don't think it's my keyboard, being that enter doesn't work on the on-screen keyboard.

Hi,I logged on to another user and the enter key worked on their side. I came back and now it is working so far on my side

I also turned on the on screen keyboard, after reading your post, and it works on there too. Maybe mine hasnt completely went kaput yet. I hope someone has a fix for this soon so it doesnt go all the way out.

I came in here to see if I could possibly find a fix to my problem and low and behold ,quite a few people are having the same exact problem! My enter key just stopped working today. I thought maybe I did something but it appears it is a problem with Dells keyboards. I also read a post about a drifting mouse,I thought again,it was me, and I had a possessed mouse pointer. Well I see lots of people posting the problem but no answers to how it can be fixed. Does anyone know where to go to fix this problem? If your out of warranty are you just S.O.L.?

I really hope I don't have to buy any new merchandice. :p My sound has also gone crazy. I no longer have sound. I have no volume icon on my taskbar menu either.

I can't believe it.  I am having the same problem.  It just started a week or so ago.  Dell needs to do something about this.  Perhaps a recall is in order.

Mine stopped working a few days ago, I even replaced my keyboard for a new one and the Enter button still don't work. I emailed Dell support, if I find anything out I'll be sure to post it.

Did you ever get an answer? My enter key also stopped working. I have unplugged from modem and shut down computer and the re-boot and it works for a little while and quits working again.

Hey; It just worked.

thanks,

When I was searching around about why my enter key didn't work, I saw a guy that said it turned out to be his motherboard, so I think it may be it, I'm not saying it is, but if the computer you have is still under warranty, I would definetly ask them about it and get it replaced. I don't think a new keyboard will work, mine didn't. I am glad that mine is still under warranty. I am going to call Dell and ask them about it being the motherboard and see what they say.

Ok. Ok.  I am having the same problem . My computer is a little over a year old and this enter key thing just started to happen to me about a week ago . I have tried to contact Dell . They wrote back to me and I tried the diagnostics test that came with the "Drivers and Utilities" CD that came with the computer .  It causes the enter key to work for a little bit . But as soon as I try to enter a new App, such as browser to e-mail , it stops working again . I read on this forum somewhere that it may be the motherboard . I went and bought two different keyboards . One PS/2 , and one USB . The USB one worked for a while , but didn't last long . So , I am out of things to try . Short of re-installing Windows XP . Oh yeah , I went to microsoft's web site to see if there was any patches or updates that would help . No luck . My computer is out of warranty , so I would have to pay for this to get fixed . Which is no problem if I could just find out what it is I should fix . I will try to contact Dell again . They have treated me right so far, so hopefully we can get to the bottom of this . I will post again if I find out anything . Good Luck Folks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This probably isn't what you wanted to hear , but , it is better than replacing parts . I did a total re-install of windows XP and everything is fine now . I am affraid that this little problem was caused by a Virus . I am no professional , but , when I tried to run the repair install , there was an error and it wouldn't let the install happen . I went to do the total install and there was a partition in windows . You HAVE TO DELETE the partition . Both sides . I believe that there was a virus in the small partition . And that wasn't allowing the enter button to work . Make sure you back up any files that you really need . And then you have to use the install disk to do this . Then you have to install everything else that Dell sent you . ex. Microsoft money , word , and of course your printer and other gadgets .

I ran my virus scan , and nothing showed up when I did . And I researched this problem on the board , and this wasn't happening a while ago . It just started happening about a week or two ago . Like I said , I am no professional . But this whole thing seemed alittle fishy to me . Like all these mother boards going ? You can call Dell and they will help you with the install . And if you get the error that reads    unregmp2.exe-Entry point not found .. will be across the top and the error report will read  The procedure entry point Get IUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL . That was the message I got when I ran the repair install . The other error message I didn't write down . But it kept popping up so I ran the complete , start new install . Not to mention it speeds up your machine when you clean it up .

I hope this helps . I again am no pro , but my machine is working like a champ now . I hope everybody has good results . I am relieved big time . I just hope that this long process solves the problem .

                                                                                                      Good Luck
