Error initializing IOS (Win95)
After F-Disk (Fat32) Formatting and installing Win95 OSR 2.1 onto a Dimension 4400 I get the error While Initializing Device IOS: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your computer. I have tried all different BIOS settings, and cant even get into safe mode. I see in the forum there has been the probelm with the Optiplex GX240. Unfortionatly the Dimension doesnt have the option to run the CPU in "compatable" mode to try the fix suggested for the 240. The specs are P4 1600, 128mb ram, is the system executing commands to fast for the OS? I have had Win98SE and WindowsXP both installed and running with no problems. 95 however is kicking up dust. I have read all the Windows support articles referreing to the IOS error and they either dont apply or, I cant get into safe mode to try it. Any help would be great, as I will need to setup 6 systems with 95 on them of this exact spec.
Thanks,
Brad

Brad

These sites may help you, they may not.
I haven't taken a good look at any of them, but maybe all of them combined together will help you resolve your problem.
I think that something in your computer is not supported by win95. Maybe the processor...the hard drive...the computer?

You want to use Option 2 ( for those who cannot get into Safe Mode to apply fix).
The KB article Q192841 basically applies to an AMD K6/2 issue.
This link states that the download file AMDK6upd.exe would apply to Intel 's experiencing the same problem.

If you decide to try this fix and it works, post back. It is a good way to find out if that patch and manual application of it, works as publicized.

Get the part number off the card and post it or go to DriverGuide.com where you will find your W95 driver. http://www.driverguide.com/
Click on Member Login.
Username:drivers
Password:all
Make your to this page
http://www2.driverguide.com/cgi/get_info.pl?company=ati
On Step 1 click the link ATI Drivers Found Bulletin Board
If you do not find it on the Bulletin Board, then search for it by the part number.
The Win95 drivers are out there.

Had the same problem on my (new) Dimension 8250 during initial clean installation of Windows 95 OSR 2.1 on extended partition (logical = D); F-Disk (Fat32) formatting ; "Error While Initializing Device IOS: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your computer." I also couldn't get WIN95 into Safe Mode. I followed Pamela's suggestion and off to http://www.compaq.com/support/techpubs/customer_advisories/DB010327_CW01_2.html I go (sorry - newbie, no time to figure out how to make that a link). Followed instructions for option 2, manual installation (note, however, to copy the files to the correct logical drive - where you installed WIN95, D in my case.) Once I loaded ALL files WIN95 completed its installation sequence. Now I just need to get a few drivers for '95: nic and video(?) at least.
Thanks for the correct solution guys!!
