Error message: No IDE Hard Drives installed.... suggestions?
Hi all,
I have a Dimension 8200. A couple of day's ago it stopped working. On power up, the following message appears:
"strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"
I tried CTRL-ALT-D. The following message appeared:
"IDE Drive Diagnostics running, please wait....
Primary IDE
Drive 0: No IDE device
Drive 1: No IDE device
Secondary IDE
Drive 0: No IDE device
Drive 1: No IDE device
No IDE hard drives installed, press any key to continue"
An IT guy at work said it sounds like my IDE controller is shot. So, my questions are:
1) How can I verify whether the IDE controller is functioning or not?
2) In the Dimension 8200, is the IDE controller built into the mother board?
3) Can I install an IDE card and by-pass the original controller (assuming the IDE controller is built into the motherboard)
4) Any other helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

F2 into BIOS manually turn each drive on:
Also verify (inside the case) that all IDE ribbon cables are seated and power connections as well.
You can force the machine to re-detect all IDE devices by hitting ALT+F, then ESC and Enter to save the changes. Expect the system to go into IDE configuration for a few minutes.

Drives must be installed CABLE SELECT For ALL DRIVES.
IDE controllers rarely if EVER die thats why they are soldered onto the motherboard.
IDE drives are of an age where they are likely dead.

ALL DRIVES MUST BE SET CABLE SELECT.
There is no primary or secondary.
You should use 80 wire color coded cables.
ALL DRIVES ON ALL CONTROLLERS ARE SET THE SAME.
The CABLE Selects which is Drive 0 or Drive 1
The blue connector goes to the motherboard.
The Black Connector is Drive 0
The Grey connector is drive one.
IF ANY DRIVES ON ANY CHANNEL ARE SET TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN CABLE SELECT ALL DRIVES WILL NOT WORK.
You cannot mix cable select with master/slave.
