Event ID 7 Error
Windows XP sometimes hangs at the blue welcome screen. When checking the Event log, it shows an Event ID 7 error stating that "The device \device\harddisk0\D, has a bad block." However, other times the machine boots fine without problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Boot the system and press F12 at the dell splash screen. This should give you a boot menu. Arrow down to "IDE diagnostics" and press 'enter'.
This quick 9090 diag might indicate a slow failure of your hard disk. (Primary drive 0)
Expect your CD/DVD drives to produce a "drive not supported" result. If your hard disk passes the short test, I'd still be inclined to run the dell hard disk diags on the drive in an attempt to produce errors or a failure.
In any event until then, be sure to have backup copies of any data you value - good advice even if the drive is fine.
