Experiencing slowdowns. How to diagnose the error?

Hello there!

Recently I got some issues with my XPS730. I got  boot error :

Floppy disk(s) fail (40)

Alert! Audio Cable not connected!

I found the solution to those messages on this forum, so thats taken care of. I do however experience slowdowns when playing games.

Not just newer games, but also games dating back to 2006. The games runs fine, then suddenly I get maybe a minute or two of severe slowdowns. The

FPS is probably reduced in half. Then after a minute of two it stops and everythng runs fine again. I'm completely unable to wrap my brain around this one.

When I first got the problem(before I solved the boot errors) I thought it might be driver related to I did a complete format of the harddrive, but that did nnot solve it.

I haven't done a format since I used windows2000 pro back in the days, so I had to struggle a bit with that one. But to me this indicates that it might not be a driver related issue. Though I should mention that this whole thing started when playing around with the NVIDIA driver uppdater thats installed on my system, so it might be hardware related.

sorry if this sounds like a confusing mess, but thats what it is heh. I have no idea how to solve this, how to approach it.

Any help would be apreciated.

Hi Tomk79,

It sure sounds like some program or process running in the background, possibly something trying to access the internet to "check for updates", which would make sense if you're playing an online game.

There are a couple strategies you can try. One would be to disable all of your non-essential startup programs. I am not familiar with any NVidia driver updater but if you have such a background program or service, I would disable or uninstall it.

Another approach is to grab a nice utility called Process Explorer and run it in the background while playing your game. Obviously, you need to play the game not in full screen mode so you can check what program or process is firing up and slowing down your game.

Finally, this is really a topic for the operating system forums, since it does not appear you have a hardware problem. So feel free to post over there.

Good luck!
