Extend Desktop on Dual Monitor on Studio Hybrid

I purchased a Dell Hybrid- small form factor box ("Dell Studio Hybrid Desktop 140 G"). It has an Intel "Mobil Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset Family" for video. A DVI and HDMI connector on the back. I was told that you can connect either HDMI or DVI but not both. Does anyone have information on how to connect 2 monitors with the second being an extended desktop? I connected a DVI Y cable and 2 monitors and the Intel video only "saw" one monitor; I was only able to get 2 monitors with the same image on both. Is there an external box or cable? An additional video card isn't an option as this little machine has no expansion cards.  THANKS!

Any update on this?

I would also very much like to know if there is any possible way using the Dell Hybrid to connect 2 monitors with the second being an extended desktop.

First I purchased a DVI Y cable and all I could do was Mirror the second moniter. Now I've ordered a cable that has DVI on one end and VGA and DVI on the other.

I'll post here if it works or not. BTW Dell indicated that the Hybrid would support 2 monitors with extended desktop, but wouldn't help unless I could give them the Dell modle number for 2 monitors; since mine were not Dells she closed the call on me. It was through Experts Exchange that I was directed to the new cable to try.

There is actually a picture of this Y cable in the Hybrid manual; I think Dell ships it with the Hybrid (but I don't recall ever seeing it)

Hi-

The cable below worked like a champ. One monitor is DVI the other is VGA.

I'm looking into buying a Dell Hybrid. I have been using dual monitors for a while and wish to keep this set up. I was wondering if I could use a DVI to DVI cable with one monitor and a HDMI to DVI cable for the other monitor? Does the Hybrid support that? If not, you're saying your DVI and VGA splitter works and the 2nd monitor is the extended desktop and not a clone of the first monitor?

You can only use one of the connections. If the HDMI is connected the DVI has no signal on it. So the DVI / VGA is the way to go. Yes I configured it with extended desktop. The splitter may even be shipping with the Hybrid now- mine didn't however.

Hi- Chuck,

I have two  22" Viewsonic panels and one is conneced to the VGA portion of the Y cable and theother is connected o the DVI portion and both work well for me although I don't do any high quality graphics or view much video on my system. I have it configured with extended desk top. As far as the shortness of the splitter- it's just that - a splitter- you still need ot plug your monitor cable(s) into it.

Hope this helps....

Hey ... Has anyone had any luck attaching two DVI only monitors to a Studio Hybrid? I have a DVI to VGA adapter but it's not compatible with the "female" end of the Y cable that shipped with my Studio Hybrid ...

* Is there a DVI to dual-DVI splitter / Y ?
* Is my adapter somehow non-standard (It has 2 pins above and below the "plate", and the plate is wider than the female).

Don't make me go back to a single display!!!

Hey All ... Turns out the cabling issue was a misunderstanding on my part ... The wide-blade / four-pin male is the standard interface to a video card, from here a double-ended narrow-blade / no-pin (female-female) cable dives into the monitor.

I can confirm the following:

* As of June 2009, the Dell Studio Hybrid ships with a DVI to DVI & VGA "Y" splitter.
* You can certainly set a primary and a secondary extended / cloned a monitor off of either branch of the splitter
* The monitors don't have to be DELL that seems to be a business issue not a technical concern.

I'm running two Samsung 23" SyncMaster 2343bw monitors, with no performance issues. (Use = Standard productivity, web / (carto)graphic design, fairly draw-intensive GIS mapping applications.)

Yeah, I said dual 23" - I keep loosing things out in the digital hinter-land!
