FTP Questions

Hi,

Is the Windows ME "Web Publishing Wizard" the same thing as an "FTP Tool"? I'm working on my first ever website, and AT&T Broadband says I need an FTP Tool, but doesn't mention the WPW, only some that are available for purchase.

If ME's WPW isn't the way to go, are there any freebies out there?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

I've heard good things about WS_ftp but have never had the chance to use it.
If you don't mind me asking, who'd you go with for a web site host?

Hi Dave et al,

Don't mind at all; I'm using AT&T Broadband, my ISP. They provide 10MB per email address, and you can have up to six of those. The downside, unfortunately, is that they don't allow hotlinking, so it can't be used to host the cool applets seen in some of the Dell|Talkers' signatures. At least, that's how I read their user agreement. (Now, whether they enforce that is anyone's guess.)

Thanks everybody for the information about FTP tools. If I ever get my site up and running it will be a miracle I will be happy to share with you all.

Richard

vetriguy,

If you need it, there is a viewlet about using WS_FTP on my tutorial viewlets site.

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java.

Are you a new computer owner, or simply new to Delltalk? You may find some helpful information on how best to use this forum here.
Want to make a hyperlink in your post, want to add a graphic or sound file, need to troubleshoot a non-working Java applet, want to build an attractive signature? These capabilities can be yours if you visit Denny's DellT@lk Tutorials.
For help in deciding what can be eliminated from your Startup list, take a look here.
Want to get rid of Network Neighborhood, change your Registered Owner name? Check out the little utilities at Delltalk Tweekz.
Ready to sign up for Web server space? Want to learn FTP? Visit Web Presence for Beginners.
For new users (or veterans who would like to help a new user), a number of basic Windows tasks are illustrated in Denny's Tutorial Viewlets.

Note: I do not answer Instant Messages but I do answer email.

I'm now with attbi after the @home mess,
and for some reason none of the ftp programs work for me.
WSftp-le,cuteftp, MS web wizard,or att's ftp
I have heard it might be due to some setting on my system,
but attbi's http transfer system works great for me.
I find it easer & faster than ws-ftp, thats what I used for my old site.
As you can tell by my sig, attbi, at least on the west coast allows linking.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. Here's the latest from my end:

Successfully downloaded WS-FTP three times, but it failed to install every time. Kept getting a blank green screen, static hourglass cursor, and a "Not Responding" message when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. (It did get far enough for me to get three automatic emails thanking me for downloading, and three subscriptions to their newsletter!)

Downloaded and installed FTP Commander, but haven't had time this evening to figure it out.

I'll have to try hotlinking with ATTBI. I'm on the west coast, also, and I may have read the User Agreement incorrectly. (When they break down my door I'll just tell 'em, "But, bob350 said it was OK!" )

Is the HTML transfer an alternative to FTP, or something else altogether? (I just want to send a folder full of pictures to my site.)

Lastly, a dumb question: When one uploads a file to the server, does that mean it has "left the building", so to speak? Or, is it just a copy that makes the trip, and the file still resides safely on one's hard drive?

Thanks again,

Richard
