Flash type unknown

Hello

I have a dimension 2350 running bios A00. I want to upgrade if possible. I followed the instructions to create a boot disk using the package tool. The system boots to dos and prompts to replace the bios A00 with A001 by responding Y for yes the process appears to start but stalls at step one and displays Flash type unknown.

No update occurs. I have tried several times with both the A01 and A02 packages.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Use a different floppy disk to create the image on. Also, before creating the floppy image, format the disk and run Scandisk on it. If necessary, purchase a box of new disks, to increase the chances of getting error-free media.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM . DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THE A01 OR A02 IT WONT WORK. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS TO REPLACE THE SYSTEMS BOARD. I HAVE FOUGHT TOOTH AND NAIL WITH DELL FOR THREE DAYS, I HAVE HAD THE PHONE TO MY EAR FOR HOURS AT A TIME BEING TRANSFERED ALL OVER THE PLACE WAITING TO TALK WITH SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY KNEW HOW TO FIX THIS,THAT NEVER HAPPENED! THE ADVISE THEY GAVE ME WAS WRONG AND VERIED FROM TECH TO TECH. FINALLY HAD TO HIRE A TECHNICIAN TO FIX IT. LUCKILY HE WAS DELL CERTIFIED AND KNEW HOW TO DEAL WITH THE INCOMPETENT DELL TECHS WHO TRY TO TELL YOU ITS SOMETHING YOU DID WHEN THEY KNOW VERY WELL THAT THIS IS A DELL MISTAKE. FINALLY DELL AGREED TO PAY FOR THE FIX AND GAVE ME COUPON NUMBERS TO ORDER A NEW MOTHER BOARD. THINK THAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM (NOT) IT SEEMS THE ONLY PLACE YOU CAN USE THE COUPON CODES IS ONLINE BUT WAIT DELL DONT SELL MOTHER BOARDS ONLINE. SO NOW I HAD TO ORDER BY PHONE, CHARGE IT TO MY CARD AND HOPE I DONT HAVE TO GO THREW ANOTHER NITEMARE TO GET MY CARD CREDITED. I HAVE BEEN WITH DELL FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS I HAVE PURCHASE TWO HOME SYSTEMS THIS YEAR ALONE, PLUS I AM THE PURCHASING AGENT FOR A MUNICIPALITY AND IN THE LAST THREE YEARS I HAVE BOUGHT NOTHING BUT DELL FOR THE CITY. ITHINK IT MIGHT BE TIME TO REAVALUATE WHO I DO BUSINESS WITH FOR MY HOME AND OFFICE NEEDS. ANYWAY IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THIS EMAIL ME HEMIDUKES@AOL.COM

SORRY CODY YOUR INFORMATION IS INVALID AND WILL NOT WORK A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY.

THE A00 BIOS HAS A SERIOUS FLAW AND CANT BE FIXED WITH A SIMPLE DOWN LOAD. IF YOU EVER HOPE TO UPGRADE YOUR VIDEO CARD ON YOUR SYSTEM AND YOU HAVE THE A00 BIOS IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. YOU MUST RELACE THE MOTHER BOARD.

After the flash attempt fails, do a DIR and get the filename of the executable.  It should be 2350_A02.EXE.  Run it; it should now work, for the most part.

The comment from ConQuer0r worked for me when flashing my BIOS from A01 to A02.

When I booted from the floppy, I got the "Flash Type Unknown" error, from the update running from the autoexec.bat file.  Then I was returned to the DOS prompt.

I then ran the executable, 2350_A02.EXE, and the BIOS update completed successfully.
