Floppy drive problems

My floppy drive seems to be dead. When I open up My Computer it shows the floppy drive symbol and 3 1/2" floppy(A:) underneath it but it won't open up my floppys. I've tried to right click and everything but all it does is lock my computer up for awhile. I usually have to control Alt Delete to get out of it. The green light comes on when I try to access the floppy drive but nothing happens. What could the problem be?  PLEASE HELP!!!

See if this article can help you troubleshoot the floppy drive.

Mnkyprnces,

It could be a loose connection. Try opening the case and unplugging the ribbon cable to the drive then plugging it in again. If the behavior continues after that, your flopppy drive may have suffered a catastrophic failure and need to be replaced.

Hi and thanks for the link. I tried to run virus scan on the floppy drive and I got this error message:

Unable to access Drive A: The drive is
locked by a disk utility. Scan again
later when the disk is no longer locked.

I am "challanged" when it comes to technical stuff and computers so I have no idea what that means. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch!

If you have tried what Denny suggested and that didn't solve the problem, could be the drive died, I would buy a new floppy drive $12.00 and new ribbon cable and install it.  If it does the same thing, no big investment - always good to have an extra floppy drive around anyway...

The scan error message is probably because you didn't have a floppy disk in the drive, you can't scan the drive only the data on the floppy in the drive.

Try a new floppy drive, their a no brainer to install (remove old drive and cables, install new drive and cables and turn your machine back on, then put a floppy disk in the drive and drag a drop a couple of files to it (the A: drive).  If it copies them to the diskette you in business.

Good Luck
