Freezing when playing Video

Hi I have a Studio XPS 7100, and at most times when go to play any video the computer freezes us and does not function.  Not even the mouse witll work.  The only thing that works is to shut down the computer manually.  I have been experiencing this for a long time.  What is this, and how can it get fixed?

Hi Suzanne,

If the system freezes only while playing videos, it could be an issue with the video drivers or the video card. Re-installing the video drivers and updating the BIOS to the latest version can resolve this issue.

The Studio XPS 7100 system might have been shipped with either an nVidia or an ATI HD Radeon video card. We will need to uninstall the video drivers from the Device Manager and Programs and Features.

To uninstall video drivers - click on Start and type Programs and Features. Locate the nVidia video card components or ATI Catalyst Control Center and uninstall them.

Open Device Manager and under Display Adapter, right click on the video card (make a note of the model number) and click on Uninstall. Restart the system once you uninstall the device.

nVidia drivers:

ATI HD Radeon drivers:

BIOS link:

Install the drivers from the above given links. Make sure you select the model number and operating system. The video drivers can also be found on www.support.dell.com. (Enter the service tag and select the operating system)

You can also reply back with the video card specifications so that I can select the correct drivers and post it here.

Run the custom scan on Video card using PC Check up from the Dell Support Center.

Please reply back with the results.
