Reseat the card and see if that helps.  (Reseat - with the PC powered off, remove the card then reinstall making sure it's fully and correctly seated.

Normally, the PC Model Number and Operating System is reaquired on any initial problem post.  We can't give you assistance relative to your specific model with out it (too many different Dell models).

The fan on the video card is controlled by circuitry on the video card.  If it continues to run at 100% it would suggest a hardware problem on the video card.

It's an XPS 630i running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

In the nVidia control panel it displays the fan as running at 100% and if I try to change it, it says 'The changes made were invalid and will not be applied.'

I will try to reseat the card - hopefully that will fix things.

Edit:

I tried reseating - and nothing. The fan runs normal until windows finishes booting to my desktop (it auto logs me in) at which the fan then goes to 100%.

msi afterburner,it is a very useful gpu tool.right below the download there is a user guide that well help in the set-up.

before you ask the tool WELL work with lot of types/brands of vid cards.

from the users guide,

"Codevelopment by msi and Rivetuner, MSI releases the ultimate graphics card utility “Afterburner.” This

utility enables all MSI graphics card users to boost performance and to monitor all kinds of critical information

on the fly. Afterburner is a kind complete free utility which is compatible with almost all graphics cards."

link   http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

if nothing else works take the card out and clean it good with a can of compresed air then put it back in remove the driver boot into safe mode and use a tool called driver sweeper to remove any bits that got left behind reboot into reg mode and reinstall the driver.

mabie the temps are to high mabie a bad driver install.

hope this helps!

Is this a new video card that you just bought or an old one that was working properly before?  Some video cards do not have a variable fan and do run at 100% all the time. Sometimes you can look at the fan connector wires on the PCB and if it has only 2 wires it is not variable and if it has 3 or 4 it is depending on brand.  I have verified this directly with EVGA before.

Hi there.  I see you have a 630i also.  Anyway, there is a great resource website here www.my630i.com that has been around for awhile for 630i owners and others.  Great place for info and help.  One bit of advice, try not to use the nvidia performance tool if you can help it.  If you have to use it, be sure to set your cpu fan to something reasonable, because it won't auto adjust after you load any profiles, it will be stuck where ever it is set.  You can get a program called MSI afterburner and see if you can adjust your fans that way.

This is an old computer - I have had it for almost a year now. I have never had a problem using the NVIDIA Control Panel before.

I am going to see if I can reset the profiles as I see that all of them have the CPU fan set to 100% and one has it at '61356631%'.

Edit:

Alright - so I went into the profiles and changed the GPU Fan from 100 to 20  and restarted my comp. Now the fan is back to normal but I don't think that it will run faster if my card gets warmer. So I'll have to watch it carefully from now on.

Thanks for the help guys!

Just my two cents worth: Take a look at MSI Afterburner. It has lots and lots of features. I only use the fan controls. I don't overclock anything.

The great thing about the fan control is that you set it any way you wnt to and it is dynamic in real time. Once you configure it the way you want it (takes about three minutes) set it to start with Windows and you are done!

Here is how I have mine set for warm weather:

You can set the temp points a.k.a. little boxes wherever......

And it's free.

It's not that old of a pc, I'm still using mine.  Anyway, what version of the performance tools you using?  The best version for the 630i in my opinion is 6.03.  Also, have you updated the MIO firmware?  You should if you haven't.  It fixes various fan and light problems.
