GX150 Processor Speed

Could someone give me the processor speed(s) for the OptiPlex GX150?

There are two versions of the GX150 motherboards. I have the later version. It can run any Pentium III or Celeron up to 1.4G; I believe the earlier version can go up to 1.1G without a socket adapter, and up to 1.4G using a socket adapter.

Hi,

How do you tell the difference between the 2 versions?  I have the SFF empty to rebuild and I don't know which version I have.  Thanks in advance.

I find the version number by using the Powerleap configuration software to check the hardware. The following was generated:

USER INFORMATION
=================
Name ---------------------------
E-mail Address -----------------
Daytime phone ------------------

CPU INFORMATION
================
Number of CPU ------------------ 1
Manufacturer ------------------- GenuineIntel
Processor (brand ID) ----------- Intel Pentium III EB (2)
Code Name ---------------------- Coppermine-T
Package ------------------------ Socket 370 FC-PGA
Family ------------------------- 6
Model -------------------------- 8
Stepping ----------------------- A
Core Revision ------------------ cD0
Extended Family/Model ---------- 0/0
Technology --------------------- 0.18µ
Microcode Revision ------------- 1
Specification ------------------ Intel Pentium III EB 1000MHz
Instructions ------------------- MMX, SSE
CPU Speed ---------------------- 996.7MHz
Clock Multiplier --------------- 7.5x
Front Side Bus ----------------- 132.9MHz
Bus Speed ---------------------- 132.9MHz
L1 Data cache ------------------ 16Kb
L1 Code cache ------------------ 16Kb
L2 cache ----------------------- 256Kb

MAINBOARD INFORMATION
======================
Manufacturer ------------------- Dell Computer Corporation
Model (revision) --------------- OptiPlex GX150                (   )
Chipset (revision)-------------- Intel i815/E/EP (B)

There is more info. But the relevant line is the "Chipset (revision)" line. If it says "(B)" as mine does, then it is the second version, which supports Tualatin CPUs without an adapter. If it says "(A)", then it does not.

Thanks,

I have the SFF case with motherboard and nothing else so I cant run any test.  1-5 of your CPU info is correct but apart from that I haven't got a clue.  there are some stickers on the motherboard, one says Rev A06 and another says FOXCOM L S-36?  CPU socket says PGA370, CPU name COPPERMINE_T.  Unit shipped on 06/20/02 and the service tag is 5B8XF0J.

Am I correct to think that this Rev A06 is from the A chipset revision line and needs an adapter?  The CPU of my choce is the intel celeron 1.4 Ghz FSB100Mhz FCPGA2-370 Tualatin Core.  Is this ok?

Thanks again in advance.

Hi, I believe you have a GX150. The GX260 is a socket 478 machine, and the markings on your motherboard clearly indicates that you have a socket 370 machine. If you only have a motherboard, you will need not only a processor, but a fan to plug into the motherboard. The motherboard checks for a specific type of fan. If you do not have the right fan, it may not like it.

Hi, I finally had time to open up the GX150. The marking at the top of the board next to the socket for the CPU says "Rev A07". I think that is the information you are looking for, but I am not sure--there are lots of markings on the board and it is hard to make out all of them because of the many devices attached to it. Also I don't know how it is different from Rev A06 (yours)--my motherboard will take a Tualatin CPU without a socket adapter. My system was shipped in 10/31/01, but the motherboard was replaced by Dell on 11/27/02. By the way, the service tag you listed corresponds to a GX260 system shipped in Europe and gives no information on the original configuration.

Hi,

Sorry I got the service tag wrong.  Its 5BSXF0J and its a GX150.  Do you know the part numbers for the power supply and fan.  Also where can I get a low profile modem, sound card and graphics card?  I suppose I should really check if it is already onboard sound and video?

Hi again,

I have just put the service tag in again and it is still coming up as a GX150, P3,TUA,1133,133,256K,SKT2.  So maybe its a GX150 in the UK and a GX260 in the US?  What does SKT2 mean and can I use the CPU of my choice?

Thanks again in advance.

You most probably have a GX150. I suspect the TUA means "Tualatin", but that is just a guess. I don't know what SKT2 means. But it is worth putting in a Tualatin CPU and try.

Hi,

I'm in the UK.  Thanks for the info on the model, I don't know how I got that wrong.  I'll get on to DELL TECH.  Thanks again.

Hi, I have a mini-tower and the original shipping list does not give any information about the part numbers for the fan and power supply.

-The power supply may be proprietary so you may have to get it from Dell.

-The fan in my GX150 mini-tower is made by Minebea (NMB). Model 3110KL-04W-B66. I believe it is this one at directron.com:

http://store.yahoo.com/directron/3110kl.html

But it fits into a green plastic "shroud" that covers the processor and passive heatsink, so it serves as a system fan and a CPU fan at the same time. [You can see the shroud in the online documentation for the GX150.]  If you don't have the green shroud, one way is to mount the fan on the case somewhere, and then have a CPU fan attached to the power supply directly. But that is a mod that you have to do yourself.

-My GX150 has integrated audio and video, so yours should have it too. The integrated video is adequate for typical office work, but not for games. If you want a low profile video card, search on this forum for recommendations. I have not seen recommendations for low profile sound or modem cards. But you may not have enough PCI slots in a SFF case.
