Given Optiplex 210L from employer. Too "ancient" to run Windows 7?

My employer was cleaning out its surplus equipment, and I was given an Optiplex 210L (2006?) XP machine for my son.  XP is okay, but I would like to use Windows 7. I ran the Microsoft Windows compatibility software and received a report that the driver for the Intel chip set is not compatible with Windows 7.  Does this mean that I need an updated driver, or that the PC can not run Windows 7 no matter what?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

The report specifies that the driver currently installed on the system, is not compatible with Windows 7 and an updated driver is required. Windows 7 can run on systems that meets the system requirements provided in the link below:

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Where can I discover and download the needed updated driver?  Intel website?

Its not too ancient HOWEVER a GX620 or Newer with X16 video would be a better choice. Buying an PCI card now is a waste. The PCI-E cards that can be had for less are MUCH FASTER than OLD PCI cards.

The 210 does not need an updated driver.

Windows 7* drivers are not available for the following older Intel® graphics controllers:

  • Mobile Intel® 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family

  • Intel® 82915G/82910GL Express Chipset Family

  • Intel® 82865G Graphics Controller

  • Intel® 82852/82855 Graphics Controller

  • Intel® 82845G Graphics Controller

  • Intel® 82830M Graphics Controller

  • Intel® 82815 Graphics Controller

  • Intel® 82810 Graphics Controller

For more information, see the Older Intel® graphics controllers and Microsoft Windows 7* operating system FAQ.

Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Video is not Aero compatable.

The standard Chipset Driver will work.

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)

Maximum Memory: 4GB

Slots: 2

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time,

the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running.

32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB.

To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit CPU and 64-bit  version of your OS.

That said the Ancient INTEL video Will not run Aero etc.

You have PCI type Video slot.

DirectX 9 graphics accelerators are not officially supported under Windows 7.   If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7.   Please be aware that none of the new Windows 7 graphics driver (WDDM 1.1) features are supported (as the Windows Vista level graphics driver is limited to WDDM 1.0 level support).

Its Likely that the Audio Codec SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio

will not be recognized.  There are ZERO WIN7 Drivers for this model.

Go to the Microsoft Catalog and Search for Sigmatel STAC / IDT???

The 210L has a PCIe-x1 slot: HIS has a nice card available, but it's $100.

The rest of the hardware should have Windows 7 drivers, as is the case with my Dimension 3100 (slightly older than the 210L).
