Unsolved

God (or someone) help me resolve system error!

Someone PLEASE HELP!

I bought a Dell 8200 Dimension computer on Jan 16th, 2002, which runs on XP. This was a considerable upgrade...or so I thought...from the emachine I had gotten for I think less than $500 bucks a few years ago.

Apparently this assumption was incorrect, since at least the emachine works.

The first sign of trouble was when Roxio CD Creator didn't work as promised in the XP environment, but that is sort of a separate story. As part of routine maintenance, I ran a disk check and got the following error message:

*** STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005,0XF9340c27,0XF9E61840,0XF9E61540)

*** tbcspud.sys - Address F9340C27 base at F9328000, Datestamp 3b8d7887

I contacted the Dell "Service" people something like 8 times over the last two days, and spoke with literally 8 different people. They told to me reinstall XP, which ultimately I did twice (including doing a debug and an fdisk at various times). For a while, the drive allocations were screwed up, such that the hard drive was "F," the zip drive was "C," etc., but that was ultimately fixed. Long story short, the parade of Dell "assistants" compiled a perfect 0-8 record of pure failure. I'd have had better luck dialing 8 random numbers in the phone book and asking advice from the people answering the phone.

The initial problem still persists. Acting on my own initiative, I uninstalled Roxio CD Creator (which I thought has been causing the prob), and restored the system to a point before Roxio had been installed. This did not solve the problem. Then, noticing that the "tb" in tbcspud.sys could refer to my "Turtle Beach" sound drivers, I uninstalled those, and restored the system to a point before the Turtle Beach components had been added. Finally, when I ran the check disk program, there were no errors...the system was clean!

Then I added the Turtle Beach components and got error messages similar to the ones I got initially:

*** STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005,0XF9434C27,0XF9E5D840,0XF9E5D540)

*** tbcspud.sys - Address F9434C27 base at F941C000, Datestamp 3b8d7887

What the heck is wrong here, and what can I do? I am desperate for any advice. I am not completely retarded, and I use computers every day of my life, but I don't have a great deal of facility tweaking system configurations, and was kind of hoping...naiively I now see...that this would be the kind of computer you could plug in and then use. Try to dumb down any advice to my level.

For the record, the Turtle Beach software I have seems to be, perhaps, last year's model. I seem some files on the disk are dated Aug. 30, 2001, and the FAQ is dated 11/01/01

I am interested in any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem, but I AM NOT interested in hearing things like:
"You shouldn't have bought a Dell"
"You shouldn't use XP"
"You should be using a Macintosh"
"This is what is wrong with America"
"I think the computer will run fine even with the error message"
"We here at Microsoft think this is a Dell problem"
"We here at Turtle Beach think you should complain to Miscrosoft"
"We here at Dell think you should reinstall XP, but in any case it certainly isn't our fault. I'll pretend to research the matter and get back to you."

Feel free to email me directly at dncmullin@yahoo.com if you prefer.

Chuck

PS. "You're gettin' a Dell, dude!" Not again.

otherchuck,

Check here and see if these drivers are the same version you now have on your 8200;

http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R37728&sid=&os=Windows_NT&searchtype=age

When you reinstalled XP did you let XP install the sound card drivers or did you install the TB drivers? Check out this article;

http://www.tbeach.com/site/kb_ftp/5854006.asp

I would say you are right about the TB card being the problem, new drivers could solve the problem. Did you do a clean install when you installed XP? Take a look at this site it has excellant directions for installing XP, just in case you have to do it again;

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

The EZCD Creator that you uninstalled was it the same version that came with your 8200? Some versions of EZCD do not work in XP, but the version shipped with the 8200 and XP Operating System should work. Reinstalling after you solve this other problem may solve that problem.

Check out your TB driver version, start there.

Post back with results.

Chuck,

I understand your frustration. I had the same problem which I have solved and check disk now runs normally. I was getting the same error message you refer to. After several calls to Dell and the frustration of foreign speaking technicians who could not understand me and whom I could not understand I called Microsoft Support and paid for the support call even though I have a full 3 years of support paid for with Dell on my new Dimension 8200.

Dell had told me to format and reinstall also which I resisted doing, thinking there must be a better solution. Microsoft identified the error right away. A corrupted Turtle Beach Sound Driver. They ran me through the uninstall of the corrupted software and a reinstall of the same driver Dell posts on their website for the TB sound card and all has been running perfectly ever since. Microsoft even stayed on the phone and gave me other XP advice while we waited for a complete run through of checkdisk, which as you know can take a while on a 100 MB hard drive. Dell would have e mailed me a link to read on their website and said goodbye!

No formats, no reinstalls, no hunting for drivers on manufacturers web sites trying to second guess if there is a better driver. It was right there all along and Dell repeatedly failed to recognize it. Needless to say it was the best $25 I have ever spent with Microsoft and saved me many more hours of grief.

Good luck.

oops,

Sorry guys for erroneously "cutting." I guess I was too anxious to share my 2 cents.

otherchuck,

For the tbcspud error with chkdsk, download the driver available here. (It's a huge download--hope you have a broadband connection.)

Did you resolve tyour problem. I still have not been able to get my sound card to work - like you Dell has been next to useless so far.

The problem is as follows:
my santa cruz sound card stopped working.
Dell sent me a replacement part no. 38FRH. I have a Dimension 8200 MT
1.8GHZ P4. I am running Windows 2000 professional

On installing it a blue screen appears with following message:

***STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005,0xB9B20731, 0x00000000,0x00000000)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT HANDLED

*** Address B9B20731 base at B9B11000, Date Stamp 3c1bfc0d -
tbcspud.sys

Beginning dump of physical memory

Physical memory dump complete

Contact you system administrator or technical support group.

On starting up again the system in checking the files reports
unrecoverable error in control panel of santa cruz. The files are
corrected and the sytem restarts but without the sound card working.

I have tried the sound card in both PCI1 and PCI4 - PCI2 and PCI3 are
occupied by modem and network card but both with the same result. The
interupt request in PCI1 is 03 and in PCI4 is 11 and both report no
conflicts

I have upgraded the driver to the most up to date version on the Dell file
library - scrz4142.exe - still no success.

I have looked at the Turtle Beach site which reports a blue screen
associated with tbcspud.sys when CHKDSK/f is scheduled to run in Win
2000 but says that this is corrected by drivers version 4142 or higher.

Also the turtle beach site reports that there may be a problem when
ACPI is installed and talks about disabling it. My machine has ACPI
installed. However I did not have this problem originally although may
be this is why the sound card stopped working??

There is a more up to date driver on the turtle beach sit but it says
that where the card is supplied by Dell I need to report to Dell. They
will also not answer any technical queries but say these must be
addressed to Dell
