Graphics Card Upgrade

I have the inspiron 560. many have told me that my computer is considered a slim computer and is not compatible with many physical upgrades. I do know that there is a slimmer version of my current version but no one has brought to my attention that there is a normal size 560. Is mine normal size or slim and the other desktop i see is a even slimmer version. I want to upgrade my power supply and graphics card but im holding off because i dont want to buy the wrong thing. My computer is (from the outside case) 16 1/2 inches long, 7 inches wide, and 14 1/2 tal. would the average power unit and graphics card fit in this desktop or do i need to find something special.

@ M4A1DrumRo11: is you motherboard looks like this? Pay attention to SATA ports, and heatsinks above and below PCI express slot (color black on my picture), if it is so - you have plenty of room to place Video Card. I noticed that some motherboard models, even-though the same numbers, might look a bit different.

@ DrJawson: I don't want to be rude or offensive, but I am only owner of Inspiron 570, I may be able to help with Inspiron 560, since it is similar in structure and components, however I have no clue about DELL OptiPlex 990 SFF, I am sorry. The best thing for you is to start new post dedicated to you only, if no one will answer, I can try to bring the attention of forum moderators to your post.

Well Dr.Jawson, which one you have, the fat one or any other with DVD player placed side ways, look at upper picture and tell us which one is yours, starting from the left, first is very good one - looks like regular desktop, the rest are slim versions - not good for upgrading.

well i have a 400w PSU but the person i contacted on dell said that i could not up grade the power supply because my mother board could only handle the stock psu which is 300w. my thinking is that what ever power the mother board needs it will take and no more. but i expected them to know more about computers then me. unless they were wrong? so can i upgrade my computer to a 400w or would that damage something? because 300w seems really small to me and i wanted to add more ram to my computer and another disk drive so that i could run 2 CDs at once. and more fans. and with the graphics card installed its already draining on the power so i dont know how much more i could add. and what happens when you have too many parts and not enough power?

The Dell Techie you contacted does not know what he, or she is talking about.

As you have noted, the computer will only take from the power supply, the wattage it requires.  The 400w PSU will work fine.

Do you have this PC or something else. If this is the one - you can upgrade it using standard ATX PSU and you will have plenty choices for Video card.

I have AMD version - Inspiron 570. So, except for processor and motherboard all components most likely the same. You can go with wide  variety of Video cards here, even dual slot - you will loose only 1 PCI slot below PCI express slot, however, you might loose access to 2 SATA ports on your motherboard, if you are interested of talking please provide your motherboard model here, the easiest way to see you motherboard model is to install CPU-Z utility, it is free, it will tell you plenty of useful information. Just bear in mind, you have a budget PC - no matter what you do, you can not make a Porshe from VW Bug. Also, be advised, this Inspiron has only 1 exhaust fan and no intake ones, so any Video cards reported to produce a lot of heat are prohibited here.

Forget to ask, are you measuring in inches or metrics? You can look at NVIDIA MSI 550 TI OC card which I fitted into my case, it is very tall, but short and there is about half inch or about 10 - 15 mm left to the removable door, so you can estimate the dimensions inside your case.

In the picture from left to right in ascending order are:

Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF), Small Form Factor (SFF), Desktop (DT), Minitower (MT).

I have a second left - Small Form Factor (SFF)

Dell OptiPlex 990 SFF - (a gift from friends), but since I used with the SFF had never encountered, so I'm at a loss: (

Hi M4A1DrumRo11

Welcome to the community.

I would recommend you to use the link below , using which you can find the parts that can be upgraded for your Inspiron 620(S) Slim by just entering the service tag in the field .

Let me know if this helps .

Note : Service tag is a 7 digit alpha-numeric code which can be found on the back side of the system .

thanks so much. i guess now does anyone have any tips for installing a PSU? It's a ATX 400w P4 - 12v switching power supply, model MP4ATX40(MICRO) / MPS3ATX40(PS3)(KY-500ATX). I dont have a power cord for it so could i just use the one from my old power supply? because the 3 prongs match up.
