Exactly what error message or what do you get when you try to install?  That info is very important, all you have posted is that you can't get it to install and without some specifics, no one can assist you.

Have you tried both the front and rear USB ports?  Have you tried a different USB cable?, etc.

It's tough to recall the entire message since it no longer appears (however, the printer is NOT installed). Basically it says there was a problem installing the printer and "access is denied". The message no longer appears although I may get it again when I try to install the printer again this afternoon.  If it does I'll post the actual text here.

I have tried all front and rear ports and different USB cables. The cables are OK - I used them to install the printer on my old system. The 8400 USB ports are all OK - I plugged other devices into them and they all work.

I'm thinking about restoring the system to the way it came out of the box from Dell and installing the printer before anything else to see if that would work. However, I don't want to try that until I have exhausted all other possible solutions (I don't care much for installing software over again).

Thanks for responding. If I ever get this figured out I plan to post the solution so others don't have to endure the same frustration.

Leonard,

Make sure you have administrator rights on account you're using to install HP printer. Failed photosmart installs require complete removal of the software before another attempt is made to install. Go here for details and follow carefully:

If that doesn't work, you may have edit the registry manually.

And if your printer came with HPs "Memories Disc Creator" CD make sure you have latest patched version *BEFORE* attempting to install it!

"CAUTION: Failure to install this update could result in potential critical errors
that can include loss of ability to start Windows or loss of data files." :o

Also check on these forums for long thread on failure to install HP 8150 with similar types of problems.

Thanks Ron.

I finally managed to get the printer installed last night!:smileyvery-happy:

I tried several "fixes" provided by the HP Tech Support folks but kept coming up empty. Then I decided to perform ALL of their suggested fixes together before trying to install the software. That did the trick. I'll put together a list of the things I used and post them here in the next day or two. Maybe that will help someone else who has similar problems.

The problem appears to be an incompatability between Windows XP SP2 and the HP Photosmart install software. I had to edit several items in the registry before the printer could finally be installed correctly.

Your information was very helpful. Thanks again.

Leonard,
Glad to hear you defeated the HP installation monster!

Will be very much appreciated if you post your fix for this problem so others can benefit from your knowledge.

Here are the things I did in order to install an HP Photosmart 8450 printer on my Dimension 8400 system with Windows XP SP2. I don't know if this will work with all Photosmart printers or only the 8450.

IMPORTANT: Before installing the printer software disable any anti-virus software which may be running and turn off the Windows XP firewall and any other firewall. Also, make sure you create a restore point just before attempting these “fixes”. Then, if something should go wrong you will at least be able to go back to where you started and will be no worse off than when you started.

The first time I tried to install the printer I got a message stating:

There was a problem installing this hardware: HP Photosmart 8450 series. An error occurred during this installation of the device. Click Finish to close the wizard.

After several unsuccessful attempts I contacted HP Tech Support and received the following suggestions:

Either the printer driver did not use Plug and Play for its installation

 or,

A registry key may be damaged

HP Tech Support asked me to run the printer installation software and then remove the damaged registry key. The instructions for doing that are:

Step one: Backup the Registry

1.      Create a folder in the Desktop called Regback.
2.      Open regedit, click OK
3.      Select Export from the file menu
4.      Browse to the Regback folder
5.      Name the file Backup
6.      Choose “All” (registry keys) option to backup the whole registry.

Step two: Remove the damaged registry key
1.      Click Start, then Run
2.      In the open box type regedit, click OK
3.      Click “+” beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
4.      Click “+” beside System
5.      Click “+” beside CurrentControlSet, and then select Enum
6.      Rt-click the registry key “LTPENUM”, then click Delete
7.      Close Registry Editor, then restart the computer

This was supposed to fix the problem but it didn’t.

HP Tech Support then suggested I uninstall the printer software, remove the pid keys from the windows registry and then reinstall the printer software.

The steps to remove the pid keys from the registry are shown here:

Note: you may have to copy the second line of the URL and paste it at the end of the address after you click on the link to get the complete address showing in your browser.

HP also suggested I download and install the latest software for the printer. For the HP Photosmart 8450 the link is:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&lc=en&o
s=228&product=402150&lang=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ps-22702-1

Note: you may have to copy the second line of the URL and paste it at the end of the address after you click on the link to get the complete address showing in your browser.

CAUTION: Do NOT connect the USB cable to the printer until prompted to do so by the installation software.

Next was an instruction to download and install the Access denied utility from the following URL.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=oj-24444-2

Note: you may have to copy the second line of the URL and paste it at the end of the address after you click on the link to get the complete address showing in your browser.

I was getting very frustrated by this point since nothing was working, I decided to take a deep breath and perform ALL the HP suggested fixes one after another and then try to install the software. I left the printer unplugged from the power AND the computer USB port this time.

As if by magic, after I finished installing the software I plugged the printer in to the power and then the USB port and IT CAME TO LIFE!!!!!

I think mine was an unusual case since HP kept feeding me one thing at a time to try.

Apparently, many folks get by with one or the other of their suggestions and don’t need all of them.

DISCLAIMER: I make no claim to be an expert and if you try these fixes you do so at your own risk. I only provide them to show what worked for me in the hope this may save others some of the frustrations I experienced.

Sorry for the long post but it's as short as I could make it and still make the explanation understandable.
