Hal.dll Missing or Corrupted
My system is unable to boot due to a 'Missing or corrupted hal.dll error'.
The machine has always been well maintained and software current. I prefer not to reinstall Windows XP. My installation cd does not include an option for XP repair. The Recovery console has never been functional. It requests an administrative password and the machine has never had one. The diagnostic cd issued by Dell comes back clean on all tests.
I do however have a more recent cd (also from Dell) with XP Professional SP3. It also has the repair XP option. Can I use this cd to repair XP on the older machine?
Thanks very much.

Yes you can use the blue CD to repair the install on the older machine.
HOWEVER
You will have to reinstall apps as the Repair breaks these.
Repair is the only other option besides wipe the drive when HAL won't open the pod bay doors.

Thanks for your response.
I'm ok with reinstalling apps. Most are either downloadable or I have disks. I just don't want to lose files. My backups are recent but it would still be a bookoo effort to get them back to the previous state. The original cd was for XP professional with sp2. My other Dell is an Optiplex. Cd is also XP pro with sp3. That CD is the one that has the repair option for the OS, So my concern was that I would be able to use that newer CD without totally killing my stuff. Reinstalling an operating system is the last resort.
Thanks again.
