Is this a USB scanner? Did you download an XP-compatible driver? Did you install the new driver before you connected the scanner to the PC?

What does "stuck" mean?

I had a 4100c and it is XP compatible. with the software from the HP site, but only limited features as it is not "WIA" (Windows Image Acquisition) compatible.

Best option is to buy a new XP compatible scanner, which will have much better resolution and features (and you can find them for under $100).

Thanks for your reply.  I will spend better time with an upgraded scanner bed than tying to ramp up the old machine.  Your advice is well taken. Thanks.

Thanks, Yes I did download an xp driver from the manufacturer, but I forgot about disconnecting the device as you mention.   It is an old scanner, and current versions are pretty inexpensive so I will upgrade the scanner rather than attempt to configure the older one. Thanks for your time and reply.
