It may be that the back port is bad. Is this a USB mouse or a PC2 with an adapter mouse?

Open device manager and look for any instances of ! or X next to devices.

What model of dimension do you have?

Hi! thanks for your reply! It is a dimension 3000 desktop. The port does work because I had the other mouse connected to it. The other mouse will still work when plugged into the back port but, it is worn out so the clicker doesn't click well and that is why I am replacing it. I am not sure how to get to device manager? Through control panel? When I go to mouse & click properties, then hardware, it says "HID compliant mouse" do I need to change that? It says it is working properly?

I am not sure whether it is a usb mouse or the other (ps2? with adapter)? I think it is just a usb mouse. It is just the factory mouse that comes with a dell when it is shipped to you. Looks just like a regular mouse with no other adapters (I think you mean the one that plugs into that green connector for the port in the back?) is that what you mean by ps2 with adapter?

The cord that connects it to my pc is just a plain cord with no adapter & fits directly into my front usb port and is square so, I do think that it is a usb.

I hope this helps? I have tried turning pc off, unplugging from the wall, connecting mouse to the back port & then turning pc on but, it will not detect any new hardware. When I plugged it into the front usb port, it detected it & it worked right away but again, I cannot keep it in front or else I will no longer be able to use that port for my other devices.

Thanks SO much! I appreciate your assistance!

USB would be a fairly falt connector and PS2 would be round. Are both of the mice Dell mice? Unless the new one came with drivers then the standard driver that windows installed will be fine.

You can get to device manager by a couple of ways, one is to right click on the my computer icon select properties, on the properties box select the hardware tab and click on the device manager buttion. the other way is through contoll panel, click on the system ion and the properties box will pop up select the hardware tab and again device manager button.

When in device manager look for items that have a ! or X next to them.

It is a bit puzzling at the moment why it will not work in the back port, do you have another ports on the back to try?

Hi!~ Yes then, it is a USB mouse cuz the connector is not round. No, the old one was not a dell mouse,,,just this one. It did not come with a cd or anything with drivers on it so, I too am puzzled?

I don't have another port because my printer is connected to the other back port.

I checked in device manager & everything had the normal + next to it...no ! or X's anywhere?

thanks for helping I sure appreciate it alot!

This really make no sense. what happens if you plug the printer into the other port. and the mouse into the one the printer is currently in. in other words swap the back ports.
