Help! My Buslink external hard drive is not responding!

Can anyone help me gain access to my Buslink Model L40/40GB external USB portable hard drive?  Recently I purchased a Dell 9100 with Windows XP home addition.  I was was formerly using an older Dell with Windows 98 SE.  My software CD for the Buslink is only good for Windows 98, etc., so I downloaded the driver for XP from the Buslink site, and should have been ready to go...  No such luck, my new computer will still not recognise the hard drive... and I have all of my family photos on there.  Any tricks to get this hard drive up and running?  Thanks!

Do you even need a driver?  Most USB devices are automatically detected by Windows XP.

Have you tried both the front and rear USB ports?

Thanks for the reply, Fireberd.  Your comments got me "back to the drawingboard", and I began to play with the device manager.  The hard drive did need a driver, but the device manager was able to make it work this time.  Thanks again for your help in saving my family pictures!
