The USB cable between monitor and PC is probably only to let you connect USB devices to ports on the monitor, rather than connecting those devices directly to the PC. In other words, a USB connection between monitor and PC is probably unnecessary.

So if you're willing to give up the convenience of USB ports on the monitor, don't connect that cable to any PC. And in that case, you may be able to use the KVM you already have.

Ron - I did just what you recommended and my monitor works fine without the USB cable - I guess that means it only supports the USB ports on the monitor.

BUT the KVM switch still won't work even without the monitor usb cable connected. Going to call Iogear again tomorrow.

Saying the KVM "still doesn't work" isn't very informative. :emotion-5:

Exactly  what doesn't work? Is it the same problem on all PCs? On one specific PC? One specific function (eg keyboard, mouse, or video)? The more info you provide, the more likely somebody can help.

Keep in mind that an older PC may not have DVi output from its video card, so it might not work if the KVM is expecting a DVi signal to pass through to a monitor that's connected by DVi cable.

Sorry - when I said the KVM switch doesn't work I meant that I get no display from my console monitor (I haven't even tried the other computers yet).

How was the monitor connected to this PC before you connected the KVM? By a DVi or a VGA cable?

Connected by DVI.

OK, so be sure the cables are connected correctly from PC ->KVM-> Monitor. eg, remove and carefully reconnect them to the correct inputs on the KVM. Power everything off first before moving cables.

Be sure the KVM is set to recognize the PC you're actually using...

And, obviously, it could be a bum KVM...

Glad you got it working, mostly.

No clue about the sound bar. You'll have to talk to Iomega. My experience with KVM has always been disappointing and I always ended up ripping them out and returning them. To much hassle and no joy. :emotion-9:

Good luck!

I finally got the whole kit and kaboodle to work - but I have no sound. Again trying Iogear but their tech support is only taking messages. I am using a Dell AS501 Sound Bar speaker. Any reason that this would not work with a KVM switch?
