High CPU Tempretures

At idle my CPU is at 55-65c, shouldnt it be lower then this, fan control is set to automatic, tried o/cing to 410mhz and core temps went to 205c. How can that happen, and what was suprising was that it was still running. Can anyone tell me why the temps are so high and how i can reduce them.

Just checked my graphics card and they are at 70c at idle, i am using the nvidia system monitor to get these readings, are they realy right?

thx

ok I am running Prime95 and i am getting 3 different readings, i am running a small FFT's test which puts the CPU to 100%, on Nvdia system Monitor i get 76c, on HWmonitor i get 80c and on Coretemp i get 60c(averages), which do i know is correct??

and yes i can hear the fans.

Something must be wrong. If you temp really went to 205  the system would have first sounded like a jet taking off and then shut down.

try running CoreTemp and see what your temps read

I have heard of some temp. miscalculations on many XPS models (Especially nVidia based).

I highly recommend RealTemp 2.70 ... A program that is small and very accurate in my experience ... And it usually varies from what other apps say (especially the nVidia Monitor) which for me was out by about 25-30 degrees in some instances.

Download it free here : http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/Real_Temp/

 Hope this helps

when using RealTemp 2.7 i get 60c on Prime95, is there anyway to get nvidia system monitor more accurate and why in the first place is it out by so moch.

Core temp. The nvidia monitor has always been notorious in how it reports things. A lot depends on what the program uses for the upper thermal junction(TJ) temp. some use 100 some use 95, as examples this depends on the processor.  Then there is how they report the temp. actual or differnce from tj

No worries, Chris.

When I get home tonight, I'll run RealTemp and CoreTemp side by side, and compare the results. I'll post those here.

I wouldn't trust the NVIDIA tool to tell me anything. Case in point:

A year ago, I purchased an 8800GTX. The NVIDIA temperature monitor showed idle temps around 72 degrees, with peaks nearing 90 under heavy load.

I ran core temp, which showed idle temperatures just below 60, with peaks in the high 70s under heavy loads. Other tools corroborated core temp's readings, and if you dig around on our forums and others, you'll see the same thing happening to a lot of people.

OP, no worries. You're in good company, and don't have much to worry about.

Make sure you look at the Tmax junction temp and see if they both use the same value.

Man this is high power thread if we have the Big boys responding...

DELL-John B,

Thanks.

With both CoreTemp and RealTemp having their tj maximum set to 105, they were perfectly synchronous. Idle temperatures hovered around 50C and load temperatures pushed close to 70C.

NVIDIA system monitor wasn't that far off, though, only reading things 5-10 degrees hotter. It WAS hotter though.

At Idle my E8500 Core Temperature reads:

  37c on RealTemp 2.7

  40c on Core Temp 0.99.3

  54c on nVidia Performance Monitor

I am going to say that the actual temperature is about 37 to 40 ... 54 seems high (but I think we have already agreed that the nVidia reading is sometimes a little off!)

by the way, my TJMax is at 100 on all 3

Just set the tj max to 85 and both showed the same of 35c at idle however going back to my first post when i was o/cing i noticed a red light on the motherboard situated between the ram and the processor, what does this mean?

thx
