Hotbar

I am having a surprise 'Merry Christmas' logo keep coming (blue/purple background) on top of the page in Tool Bar area, every time I start Windows Exploring or MS Internet Explorer. This is happening since yesterday (25/12). When checking the View in Tool Bar I see this thing called Hotbar. I am back to usual Tool Bar background if I uncheck the Hotbar, but it is back evrytime I start the Windows Exploring or MS IE.

What is this Hotbar? How did I get it? There is a site called Hotbar.com.

Help me!

Kay,
How ironic, downloaded my mail, noticed one of the E-Cards has a link to Hotbar.com. Thanks for the info, got in stored in the "vault" now. Hope Santa was good to ya.
Later,
Jeff

Hi Kanti,

I went to the Hotbar site--thanks for providing the URL--it made it much easier to find them :). It appears that someone at your place visited the site, chose to view one of the toolbar graphics, and agreed to an on-site installation of a file called hotbar.exe. I downloaded and saved the file, rather than agree to the on-site install, but the result is the same--both of us have Hotbar at the moment.

To remove this, go to My Computer => Control Panel => Add/Remove Software. Choose Hotbar.com, the agree to remove it. That should take care of it. I will be doing this as soon as I finish here, and will post back if I experience difficulties with the uninstall. If I don't post back, it means the application came off cleanly, OK?

Good luck,
Kay

Hi Jeff,

When I was at these people's site, it was very deceptive, I thought. If you click on a toolbar example, which they say to do if you want to view it, they start an automatic download with the purpose of installing it on-site. You do have to approve the install, at least. If you say No, you are taken to a screen which says it's a safe ActiveX component, and they'll give you the chance to download the file and install it yourself--I took this choice, for research purposes. Otherwise, it's basically just selling their service, and I expect that it will heavily involve advertising on the tool bar if it is kept--I don't know this, however.

In any case, it did come off cleanly, so at least they were correct when they said it could be removed if someone didn't like it.

Santa was surprisingly good to me--I think I might have gotten some little faux pas (plural version) by him :) I hope he dropped a lot of good stuff by your place, too:)

Later (too),
Kay

Hi Kay,

You are right on dot. These people had installed the 'Hotbar' when one of the e-cards (we had so many) was opened by me or by my daughter. I got rid-off it as explained by you. In fact, it had slow down the Windows Exploring and MS Internet Explorer opening windows. However, I am now back to normal.

Santa may be good with Jeff but he was not surprisingly good with me as we got the white stuff last night as usual and I had to shovelled my driveway. An angel said to me other day "It's part of winter, so we work with it".

Hi Kanti,

I'm so glad you were able to get rid of the toolbar--that was deceptive and annoying.

I'm really sorry about the snow, though--it was really easy to say that when I looked outside and the ground was bare. You forget some of the difficulty of snow-shovelling from year to year :).

Good luck, and here's hoping you have a dry winter,
Kay
