How many RAM 128 or 256 MB?

Is 128 MB enough?

I`ve heard that 256 can slow the system down, is that true?

I read it today in the PC magazine "PC Direkt" and I read it in other PC magazines also, that is why I posted the question here.

You are kidding right???? If not then try to avoid talking to stupid people!

256 systems run faster than 128 and 512 is faster yet!

The ONLY thing that would cause more memory to be slower is the memory test during bootup... If that is a problem, the test can be eliminated in BIOS.

128 Mb RAM is plenty of RAM at the moment, but if you want to do anything like video editing, Games, audio, etc. you'll definately want at least 256 or more

Dell tech told me that 256 MB is just right. Anymore just might slow the computer down. I also read the same in PC mag.

Hey,

Be set for the future in the computer world, go with 256mb...

I hope this helps.

The problem is related to the TX or VX chip sets which are Pentium-class but not Pentium II. These were designed in the mid 1990's and probably are all gone now. Yes the machine could run slower with more memory because of the way windows fills memory. To the best of my knowledge it was only the design of those two chipsets that caused that and some other problems (erratic behavior?).

Thanks for the explainations. I did not see these articles.

Never the less, I am not impressed. I doubt that there is any slow down that you could actually see.

Although this one may be true, based on some obscure benchmark, I'm filling it in the "Computer Myths" category...

Thank you for the answers.

I got answers from a German forum today and they said also that it depends on old Pentium processors and mainboards which could not cache more than 128 MB Ram.

Also old Windows versions should have these problems to handle more than 128 MB Ram, they said.

With new Pentium III processors, which have the cache on the processor and new Window versions, it is o.k., then more Ram is better than less Ram. :)

Thank you again all. :)

I asked because Dell offers cheap Ram in Germany at the moment, when you buy a new computer.

And I need a new computer, I wait only still for the Pentium 4, which should be offered by Dell in end of october.

I have 256mb on my XPST 600- extremely slow when opening & using some programs- like wordpad. I have 128mb on my 4100 & it opens & is usable immediately.
