How much memory can my system have?

I have a Dell Inspiron 560 with a Celeron 450 processor.  There are 4 slots for RAM to be installed (2GB in there already).  The general specs say it can hold up to 8, but i do not know if something on the computer limits the amount I can have; on my HP A500N it could theoretically hold 2 GB but because of how the system was set up with the motherboard and processor I could only put 1 GB in it.  The self help automated thing is no help with this question.

Hi retrofan42,

Inspiron 560 computer supports maximum 8GB 1066-MHz DDR3 memory. Each DIMM slot can accommodate a single 2GB memory module. If the computer has a 32bit operating system, only up to 4GB memory will be usable.

Following is the combination of DIMM slots to be used based on the number of memory modules being installed to achieve Dual channel performance :

  • One Module - DIMM 1
  • Two Modules - DIMM 1 & DIMM 3
  • Three Modules - DIMM 1, DIMM 3 & DIMM 2
  • Four Modules - DIMM 1, DIMM 2, DIMM 3, & DIMM 4

Do let me know if you have any further questions.
