How to re-enable display of Java applets in MSIE 5.0

Good afternoon,

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q155/1/63.asp

How to reenable display of Java Applets in MSIE 5.x
I seem to have a conflict between MSIE 5.00 and Java 5.00.3240

How do I either
(1) Raise MSIE upto 5.01 or (2) lower Java back to 3193???

All I see now is the placeholder box with a very small icon.
I am currently using: Windows98 = v4.10.2222

In MSIE 5.00.2919.6307IC, under View,
Clicking on Java Console produces no visible results.
(Console IS shown under Netscape 4.72)

I have downloaded and done a Normal (re-)Install of
MSIE = v5.00.2919.6307IC from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/
(There is no option, as I was once asked, for Full.)

Microsoft's Virtual Machine VM
Earlier, incorrectly, I installed the Java Compiler v5.00.3240
Now I have downloaded and installed the corresponding version of
Java from http://www.microsoft.com/java/, msjavx86.exe.
JVIEW did not change back to 3193, JView still = v5.00.3240
How do you uninstall Java v5.00.3240, so you can install 3193?

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm?Page=productupdates
shows no relevant Critical Updates.

I have also run, under Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs |
Install/Uninstall | Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet
Tools | Add/Remove | Repair Internet Explorer and re-booted.

In MSIE under Tools, Options, Security, Custom Level,
all settings have Enable selected. (And Low Security)

Microsoft's Virtual Machine VM
In MSIE under Tools, Options, Advanced, Microsoft VM,
all three boxes are checked.

And, if it matters,
Outlook Express = v5.00.2919.6600
Outlook98 = v8.5.5104.6 (Build 52919.6307)

One of the sites I fail to see the Java applet on is:
http://webpac.hennepin.lib.mn.us/hclwebclient.html
All I see there, is the empty placeholder and tiny icon.
(I do see the console under Netscape 4.70 ...see below*)

I use Norton Disk Doctor and Norton WinDoctor. No errors.
I have run clspack -auto

Resource Meter shows
System resources: 71% Free
User resources: 71% Free
GDI resources: 83% Free

Java does display under Netscape Communicator 4.72
*but it errors out at the end of the transaction with
"Unsigned Java Appl(et)"

I have run clspack -auto

Thank you, -John

P.S.
c:\bootlog.txt shows...

[0008687A] INITCOMPLETE = SDVXD
[0008687B] INITCOMPLETEFAILED = SDVXD

[000861C4] DEVICEINIT = MTRR
[000861C6] DEVICEINITFAILED = MTRR

The second one I did restore to c:\windows\system

Thank you, -John jesmer@citilink.com

John,

I am somewhat confused. You report your version of IE as 5.00.2919.6307IC. I don't know what the IC indicates, as my version is the same as yours but without the IC. I have that installed as well as Virtual Machine 5.00.3240 and have no difficulty with Java applets.

I visited the site you mentioned in your post but was unable to see any Java there.

In my version of IE 5.01 I have no Java Console listed as an option under View.

Under Tools|Internet Options|Advanced the only item under Java I have checked is "JIT compiler for Virtual Machine."

Your original question was how to raise MSEI to 5.01 which you have already done. I don't know how to lower Java back to an earlier version, but it shouldn't be necessary. The only thing you mention in your post that concerns me is the "IC" at the end of your MSIE version number.

This post has a Java applet for a signature, hope you can see it in IE.

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java.

In tools under internet options, he will find the answer. He should open the tab for security. In it, under custom, he should check "open java applets." The VM in the "advanced" tab has a java control panel that he can enable if he wants. Mine, like yours is unneeded. Possibly, at a site, he is having a problem with java applets that are malicious and IE will not open them. My java is set at "high security."

Good afternoon,
Thank you for trying.

Under custom there is no"open java applets."
The only two references are:
Scripting of Java Applets and Java permissions.

Also, Under VM Advanced, there is no control panel; there is enable counsole, but it is never displayed.

Thanks again, -John

Good morning,

Than you for your suggestion.
Shouldn't my version SAY 5.01, not 5.00 if it is actually 5.01? Thank you.

Good afternoon Pam,

Thank you for the information!

I have MSIE v5.00.2919.6307IC do I will assume I have 5.01 from here on. JVIEW shows v5.00.3240.
So I guess I have MSIE and JAVA properly matched?

-John

P.S.
Wish I knew how to have a cool logo! :-)
