How to setup SSD onto Optiplex 740

Hi there!

In our workplace we've got some Dell Desktop Computers (mainly Optiplex 360 and Optiplex 740). We've one 740 mounted as "server" of several applications running on tomcat. Today is the day in which we wanna install a SSD (yesterday arrived the new Samsung EVO 500 GB at our offices), but I can see some problems.

There isn't any SATA cable/port available or free, since the two ports are occupied by the DVD drive and the HDD. So, I decided to replace the HDD with the SSD (I'll make an image of the HDD and put it into the SSD with ubuntu or so and dd tool).

Additionally, the old HDD is of 3,5 inches and the new SSD is of 2,5. The caddy where the HDD is mounted doesn't seem to fit the SSD, and I've never seen any caddy like that before. So, can I buy a simple 3,5 to 2,5 adaptor or do I need any special one?

Thanks for your help :)

You can mount 2 drives in 1 bay if you use 2.5 inch laptop drives.

The Optiplex R494D 2.5 inch caddy fits inside the DN8MY 3.5 inch blue caddy.

The Silverstone adapter has all the mount points of a standard 3.5" hard drive, and it's only $12 with free shipping. It holds two 2.5" devices stacked.

So the SSD Adapter caddy is 0R494D
