How to start in Safe Mode

I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but...

The online manual (The PDF help file) says, to start in safe mode,
when the computer starts up, and you see on the screen
"Select which Operating System to Use" or something like that,
hit F8 Key.

I do not see such screen.  Upon start, I get one screen
where at the top right says F2=Set Up; F12=Start Menu
and then I get a screen with blue www.dell.com bar at the top,
and then it goes into Windows Start-Up.

I do not see the screen they are talking about.  Can you help?

(I am asking so I can run Norton AV in safe mode)  Thank you.

When you see the F2/F12 screen, enter F8 and you're there.

1st reply = how it should work...not in my 4550 (XP) without repeated fast strokes of F8, and then usually not on 1st try. But be persistent and it'll happen :)

I think Dell should address this issue.

Have you tried pressing the F8 key when the Windows logo first appears?

yes, like I said..."that's how it's supposr to work"

Most times, it just continues to boot, other times it displays "keyboard error" and maybe 1:4-5 times : WHALLAH , Safe Mode :)

Assuming that you have a wireless - USB keyboard, have you tried switching the port the keyboard is plugged into?  Also try another keyboard to rule it out as the cause.
