In Windows 98, if you type in msconfig at the run prompt you get another window with several folders. One of these folders is the config file and another one is the autoexec file. These are the traditional files that I am use to (which contain info about stacks, buffers, etc... But with Window ME, when you run msconfig, the config and autoexec files do not show up. I'm just wondering where they are now located so I can take a look at them. thanks again.

Same place they've been since the good ol' dos days. Autoexec.bat and config.sys are in the root directory of your harddrive, but are "hidden". In MS Explorer: Tools/folder options/view/show hidden files & folders. You can view/edit with notepad, being careful to exit without saving inadvertant changes. These files don't seem to be used for much by ME. Bruce

Windows Me, if properly installed, does not install or use config.sys or autoexec.bat. You should not be able to find it anywhere. But, if you have on your system, go to Search, type config.sys, and hit find. Good luck.

Just did a search for autoexec.bat and config.sys as per Russ’s suggestion. These files residing in the root directory will not show up in search unless one opts to “show hidden files”. However, in addition to the hidden files in root, I found files of the same name in the folder c:\windows\command\ebd. Unlike the files of like name in root, these files contain extensive direction and configuration instructions. What the heck are these for? My guess is a boot process outside of the operating system, maybe for system restore. Can any one confirm or correct my guess? Thank you: Bruce
