Improve Dell Optiplex GX620 for gaming

Hello, I have a Dell Optiplex GX620, mini-tower, with 3.5 GB of RAM, and a Radeon HD5450 Graphics Card installed. When I try to play big games like Saints Row The Third, the framerate becomes very choppy and the game is unplayable. Smaller games, like Tropico 4, work pretty well, but are still a little choppy. What can I do to improve my computer? Did I buy a bad graphics card?

The 5450 is way underpowered for gaming. You might try a 7750, which is under $100 and compatible with your stock power supply.

I think that may be too big for my computer, it's very slim. Also, I only have a VGA port for my monitor

Hello Minddrips,

Following are the list of Video Cards compatible with the Optiplex GX620 Mini Tower without upgrading the Power Supply :

Hope this helps!

The Sapphire 7750 will fit and it has a DVI-to-VGA adapter.

The HD 5450 is no where near meeting the minimum video card requirement for Saints Row The Third.  You have 3 choices. The HD 7750 mentioned. The HD 6670 HERE or the HD 6570 HERE.  They are all low profile cards.  However, you may have an issue if you have the Desktop or Small Form Factor models versus the Mini Tower as they state a 25 watt maximum video card and only the HD 5450 qualifies for this.  An old Pentium 4 CPU is not going to give you much help at all either for gaming as it does not meet the minimum requirement.  There's just not much you can do with a GX 620.  I would not spend over $100 for a video card like the HD 7750 and match it up with an old Pentium 4.  The HD 6570 for $39 is good enough and superior to the HD 5450 if it will work.
