Yes you can, here is your system drivers: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-3847-desktop

If you notice when you choose Operating System for your drivers, you see "MS Windows 7 64bits"

That means you can install Win7 on your system and have drivers that work with that OS, "MAKE SURE YOUR WIN 7 IS 64BITS" there are no WIN 7 32bit drivers (besides Vista 32bit).

When you wipe the drive make sure you "ZERO" completely then install fresh like it was a new drive from the store.

Here is how to "ZERO" http://gizmodo.com/5494427/leave-no-trace-how-to-completely-erase-your-hard-drives-ssds-and-thumb-drives

I'm in the same boat.  Got 10 of these systems only to find out that certain print functionality needed in the office isn't installing under 64 bit windows.

I got the network and audio drivers directly from realtek and they work fine, but there's several missing drivers and I haven't been able to find any useful information.  The person I got on the phone w\ tech support didn't even attempt to help locate drivers that would work with the system.

I just find it hard to believe there aren't 32 bit drivers available for the hardware.

After spending some more time w\ this I got everything except for the wifi.  Not sure what the deal is with that... The driver for it is supposed to be for the Bluetooth and wifi.  The Bluetooth shows as if it's installed properly, but the wifi shows as missing the driver.

In any event...

Dell really should have these drivers all listed on the download page.  I literally spent 3-4 hours at least messing with this trying to find the drivers and installing them.  Should have just been a click away on the download page.

Did you have to zero out the install drive, or did it install OK without that extra step? Also, if you unzip the Bluetooth/Wireless install utility (I used 7zip), you'll get the sub-directories that have the wireless drivers, in both 32 and 64 bit. (Most Dell 64 bit drivers include 32 bit as well).

Path to the 32 bit driver, relative to where I unzipped the file, was "Dell I3847\DW1705_Dell_W81_A00_Setup-56JX5_ZPE\drivers\production\Windows8.1-x86\WLAN-Driver".

The 32 bit driver from this location worked for me on the wireless. http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=GMW8T I have another problem, though. In Windows 7 32 bit, explorer freezes for 30-45 seconds every time I use it. If I run something from the desktop or Start Menu, or open Control Panel, or "Computer", etc, the hard drive access light freezes, and I have to wait. This also happens inside games when I advance a turn, save, etc.

I need some help please. I downgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 7 ultimate x64.  When installing the win7 at the part when it asked which disk to install on I went too advanced and deleted all the portions and formatted the hard drive. Then I installed win 7 no problems. The problem I have is at boot up I keep getting a black screen saying no bootable disk found! But at startup if I push F12 I come into boot management I can then scroll down to my hard disk and choose it by clicking enter and the system starts just fine! But I have to do this EVERY TIME when starting my PC! I have gone into BIOS and changed under boot the following settings to:

Boot mode (UEFI) Should I have (Legacy)???

Secure Boot (Disabled)

Legacy Option (Enabled)

Now I’m wondering if I should start all over with installing win7 again but add three portions

1.)  500 MB (EFI system Partition)

2.)  100MB (OEM Partition)

3.)  930 GB (Primary Partition)

I really do need some professional help with this!  I’m stumped!!!

You have to boot windows 8 and delete ALL partitions.

All of what I am saying presumes you know how to make a bootable windows 8 and windows 7 USB Flash drive.

Otherwise you need an external USB DVD Drive because the onboard sata DVD stops working when you set the sata mode to ATA.

If you cant get into F2 BIOS SETTINGS disconnect the hard drive to get its attention and leave it disconnected until you are done.

You need to Disable Secure Boot.

First TAB is Advanced. You can move to it with the arrow key -->

Highlight Onboard Device Configuration with the down arrow and hit ENTER.

Down Arrow to SATA Mode and hit ENTER.

Use the Arrow key to change AHCI to ATA and press ENTER.

Then Hit ESC to go back to the advanced Tab.

Arrow --> to the right to get to BOOT Tab.

Down Arrow to Boot Mode and Hit Enter.

Secure Boot Control should be Disabled.

Under Boot mode : Select Legacy instead of UEFI and hit enter.

You can put AHCI and INTEL RST back Later after using the microsoft patch.

You need LEGACY Boot Not UEFI

You need to NUKE the drive with DBAN if you don't have a windows 8 DVD to erase it with.

When its right you can boot and install XP but there will be drivers "missing".

Thanks for the help! :emotion-2: But it was a bunch of UNNECESSARY and TIME CONSUMING stuff that you do not need to do!!! The only thing useful was… (You need LEGACY Boot Not UEFI) Which I did change and it worked perfectly!!! My Pc boots with no problems!!! The rest had nothing to do with my question. You do not need to change AHCI to ATA!!! When installing Windows 7 Ultimate it will add the AHCI drivers at the installation proses. And another thing I do not have Windows 8 or XP installed!  OR why would I even want to boot and install windows XP and the drivers?!!!   I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed!

People say you cant install XP on the machine.  You can but its a pain and lots of drivers don't work.  I did this on a separate drive so that I could see if it was even possible.

Installing XP and Vista and 7 works fine in ATA mode and no need to go hunting for F6 drivers.

I'm in the same boat. I purchased 4 of the inspiron 3847 units and I need to install win7pro 32 bit on 2 of them.  I have a 32 bit app to run on them. Could you share the locations  where you were able to get the drivers (vid, nic, aud).  Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Yes you can wipe out windows 8 and install windows 7. I have a copy of the software that goes in the 3847 with all the drivers. If you have a video card instead of integrated video just got to the drivers download and select the windows 8.1 drivers and download the video driver

Personally I would call dell and poke at them for the RESOURCE CD which has all the drivers for 7.

The Audio is realtek as is the Network.

CHIPSET Should be done BEFORE Any other driver.
