Inspiron One 2320 multiple horizontal lines in screen when powered on. Intermittently.

Have an Inspiron one 2320 all-in-one touchscreen. The problem is kinda unique. I can restart the computer fine by going to start menu and selecting RESTART and it loads windows fine, but when I go to the start menu and select SHUTDOWN and when it finishes the whole shutdown process. I press the power button it will show multiple horizontal lines of multiple colored lines and will not show the DELL splash screen with the F2 OR F12 but the sound can be heard. I have to power it down holding the power button down. Then with 2,3,4 or 5 tries powering it on and off it will boot normally. I tried an external monitor when that problem occurs and on the external screen it looks fine.

I have tried updating the BIOS to current A10. Tried Updating the video card driver to current. then rolling back driver just in case the Windows update driver could be corrupted. Tried deleting the driver then reinstalling it. Ended up Factory recovering it with DELL DATA SAFE RECOVERY PARTITION. Still the problem persists.

Is there a software fix for this that anyone has come up on? I am thinking just the LCD or motherboard is defective since it appears fine on an external monitor.

Thanks for anyones help.

Hi I6nndun,

This definitely sounds like a hardware problem. The fact that the screen is acting like this when you first start it up tells me it's not a driver issue, so reinstalling isn't going to help. My suggestion would be to run the Dell diagnostics from the F12 partition.

I have the same problem. I get colored lines up and down through the middle of my screen. I ran a F12 and diagnostic test and it didn't find any video problems. I unpluged the external monitor before the test started. I seen the dell screen F2 / F12 screen  then I pressed F12 and watched the diagnostic test on the dell inspiron 2320 all in one.... I'm not sure if there's a video flex cable in this computer that's damaged or that maybe the problem is the motherboard? The motherboard costs $200 on ebay.

Hi Joestpaul,

The diagnostics should allow you to determine whether this is a hardware or software problem. The lines, if they appear during the diagnostics, indicate a hardware problem. If not, then probably a driver, which I think you've confirmed.

The Diagnostic screen looked normal when I ran the test.

So,

I was leaning towards a bad motherboard video chip, so, I sent it in for repair through a company that specializes in Dell Inspiron 2320 All In Ones through ebay. $70 plus $10 for shipping..

When I received this All In One on a trade for money owed me the operating system was loaded and I seen the same lines. Maybe the Microsoft driver that just loaded when the original owner loaded window 7 is the same bad driver that loaded when I loaded 7.

I'm hoping the repair person will be honest with the problem. I just sent the motherboard and processor to him.

I just received a call from the company that I sent my M/B to to get repaired. I was told the bios was corrupt and, I should receive my Motherboard in the mail in a few days. I paid $10 for shipping and $70 for repair. It would have cost me $200 + on ebay for a replacement board. I will see soon if the motherboard has been repaired.correctly.

Hi Joe,

Ok, doesn't sound like such a bad deal if they actually fix it. Please let me know what happens.

I received the repaired motherboard back / or exchanged motherboard ( The service tag number in the bios is different.

I'm having the same problem with colored lines all the way up and down the screen

I'm waiting to hear back from the company who said they upgraded the bios and it was suppose to have fixed the problem.

I'm starting to wonder if it's still the video cable?

I had to order a power cord when I first received this also. I may have the wrong power cord. I ordered a PA-15 19.5 volts 7.7 amps but the ac power supply don't say 150 watts. I was told it was 150 watts. But, I receive an error message at boot up saying that I should get a 150 watt power supply or I could damage the computer. Or I should just press F1 to continue, and it boots to the desktop just fine.Could the wrong power supply have anything to do with the colored lines up and down the screen? The Dell Inspiron 2320 all in one has this on the sticker on the computer.

Reg Model W03C

Reg Type W03C001

So I researched the W03C on google / ebay / amazon / and it shows the power supply has a blue ring light  around the ac power adapter.

The one I ordered from amazon PA 15 don't have a blue ring around the tip on the ac power adapter. I'm waiting to hear back also from the seller on amazon to see if I have the wrong ac power adapter.

I don't want to spend anymore time or money on this computer, so I made arrangements with the company that repaired the motherboard to issues a refund....I have $80 into the board, $40 into a ac power adapter $12 into a dvdrw burner. I've seen these computers on ebay working from $199 and up

Thanks for your help

Tad late, but in case this helps anyone else...

We have a number of 2320's and many laptops at work which appear to have identical power packs.
i.e. look the same, have same voltage and amperage output

2320 power pack works fine on the laptops

laptop power pack does not boot the 2320

Comparing closely (without memorising part numbers) the black plastic blue tipped plug on the 2320 is very slightly larger with smoother 'barrel'.

Not sure if Dell have done like Apple and installed smarts in the powerpack i.e. do an Apple update with your device on charge and some power packs get a firmware update! (yes they do mean plug your laptop into mains power!)

Sounds like I have same or similar issue on an i3 Inspiron One 2320 AIO

Sometimes from off, on startup flashing colours (numerous pixels different, cycling) display prior to POST message, so not a Windows driver or something which can be fixed by recovery partition reinstall (tried anyway).

Sometimes on resume from Standby or Hibernate, same thing.

Operating system is running fine when display goes wonky, verified by remote desktop and second external display.

Dell auto video tests find no issues (no artifacts on screen, video memory test passes fine)

Now out of warranty; changed main RAM, didn't resolve.

Power cycling with the soft power button fixes the issue maybe 1/5 of the time.

Removing the power cord (plugpack) for approx. 10 seconds fixes the issue every time.

Work-around at present is tap soft power button, wait for Windows to hibernate, switch off at wall, wait, then back on and all is OK

Happens when PC cold and hot, so doesn't appear to be a thermal issue (Australian summer and AIO == lots of fan activity)

A10 BIOS download reports same or later already installed.

Suggestions? (other than hot air gun in the hope this is a dry joint)

Chris
